Club reveal new captain for 2014/15 season

Peterborough United today confirms Jack Payne as the new captain for the 2014/15 season. Manager Darren Ferguson said "I spoke with Jack this week about how impressed I have been with the way he has come back this summer and how he leads by example, influencing the young lads and that played a massive part in my thinking."

"Sometimes you give the responsibility to a player and they buckle under the pressure, but Jack is a leader on the field and although he is only 22 he successfully captained his former club Gillingham and he was delighted to accept the responsibility.

Chairman Darragh MacAnthony echoed Fergusons backing of Payne "Jackie is very mature for his age and although he will be one of the youngest captains in the Football League, he is a leader and he leads from example.’ ‘I spent some time with Jack this week discussing my expectations of him and the team for the coming season and one thing’s for sure, he leads from the front and is highly respected by the rest of the squad, which is exactly what you require from your captain."

Jack captained the first half of the clubs pre-season friendly against S.C Freamunde on Wednesday evening and on returning from the game the player expressed his delight at being named captain of the club.

"I wasn’t expecting it to be honest, but I must say it’s a massive honour to be named captain."

"‘I’m a talker regardless so it won’t be too much different for me on the pitch, but this is massive and a very proud moment that I will relish."

Jack’s first match as Captain at London Road in the League will be against MK Dons, an occasion he is looking forward to.

"It’s always great playing at home especially in these big games, we want to give the fans something to shout about this season, and if you start the season well and you get a good crowd the chances are they will stay."
