Posh Into Quarter-Finals Of JPT

Peterborough United withstood a late onslaught from Brentford to progress into the quarter-finals of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy following a hard-fought 2-1 victory at London Road in front of a crowd of over 5,000.

Paul Taylor and Danny Swanson both saw early efforts go wide of the target in the early moments as Posh tried to make a fast-paced start against the Bees.

McCann fired a volley over the crossbar on 12 minutes after excellent approach play from the lively Taylor down the right.

The deadlock was broken on 18 minutes and it was an unfortunate own goal from Martin TAYLOR, who was in the wrong place at the wrong time, the ball rebounding off the big centre back after Button could only parry a low effort from Paul Taylor.

Sam Saunders whipped a free-kick just past the post moments later after a foul by Little was punished by referee Mr Davies. On-loan Bees front man Marcelo Trotta headed over on 26 minutes after a good cross from Saunders.

Taylor forced Button into a smart stop on 33 minutes after collecting a throw-in and turning his man on the edge of the area. Taylor tested button again on 40 minutes, but the goalkeeper was equal to the effort.

At half-time, Posh were forced into a change with Zakuani replaced by Shaun Brisley. Zakuani took a knock in a collision with Alcock.

On 52 minutes, a strong burst into the box from Mark Little saw him bare down on goal, but he flicked his effort into the side-netting with just the keeper to beat from a tight angle.

Taylor was a whisker away from making it 2-0 on 63 minutes after collecting a pass from Assombalonga, the on-loan Ipswich front man firing just past the post.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing replaced Kearns on 65 minutes as Darren Ferguson made his second change.

It was an immediate impact from Mendez-Laing who ran at the defence and was tripped by Calvet. Grant MCCANN stepped up from the spot and coolly chipped the ball into the net with goalkeeper Button stranded.

Nugent blazed over at the near post following a corner kick on 77 minutes as the Bees threatened. Brentford did pull a goal back on 78 minutes as a cross from Diagouraga was met by substitute NUGENT who looped a header over Olejnik and into the back of the net.

Douglas headed over a set-piece while Olejnik produced a fine stop to deny Saville as the Bees ended the game strongly.
