A bit more information about our opponents on the Irish tour.

Peterborough United fly out for the pre-season tour of Ireland on Monday morning and will face Shelbourne and UCD during their stay in the country.

Posh face Shelbourne on Tuesday evening before facing UCD 24 hours later. Here is a bit of background on the two opponents.

Shelbourne are one of Ireland’s most famous clubs, with a rich heritage including some famous forays into Europe. Indeed from 1995 – 2006, Shelbourne appeared in Europe every season and reached a pinnacle in the 2004/05 season when they reached the third qualifying round of the Champions League, a feat never achieved before by a League Of Ireland side. A 3-0 aggregate defeat to Deportivo La Coruna signalled an end to the run but the team entered into Irish folklore.

This season has been a bit of a struggle, but the recent appointment of the experienced Johnny McDonnell has given the club a boost as they bid to avoid relegation. In recent seasons, Wes Hoolahan (Norwich), Kevin Dawson (Yeovil) and Anthony Stokes (Celtic) have all played for the club.

University College Dublin (UCD) is one of Ireland’s foremost universities and the football team that represents the college has played in the League Of Ireland since 1979, the last 4 season being in the Premier Division. UCD is unique amongst League Of Ireland clubs in that nearly all of their players are students at the college, many of them on its highly-regarded scholarship scheme, which gives players the chance to combine senior football with the opportunity to earn a college degree.

Gary Dicker (Brighton), Conor Sammon (Derby) and Paul Corry (Sheffield Wednesday) have all played for UCD recently.

Admission into the Shelbourne game will cost €10 for adults, €7 for students with NUS card and €5 for children under 16 and OAPS.
