Five Star Showing From Rampant Posh
Peterborough United recorded their biggest ever away win in the Championship with a 5-1 demolition of Millwall at the New Den.The deadlock was broken on seven minutes and it was a glorious strike from Lee TOMLIN who collected a pass from George Boyd and rifled the ball into the top corner leaving Forde with no chance.
Bobby Olejnik made a fine stop to deny Trotter's effort on 12 minutes as Millwall responded well to going behind so early on in the contest. The Lions levelled 13 minutes as winger James HENRY, who was on target in the win at Luton Town, lobbed Olejnik from an acute angle.
Olejnik then denied Benik Afobe's scrappy effort as the home side continued to press. Shane Lowry was booked for a foul on Mendez-Laing on 18 minutes. Rowe headed a McCann corner kick wide of the target moments later as this open encounter continued to see chances created.
Bostwick produced a fine block to deny Afobe at the back post before Zakuani was forced off with what appeared to be a shoulder injury for treatment. He was soon back on though.
On 32 minutes, Posh were back in front and it was ROWE again who found the back of the net for the fifth time in eight games, rifling home with his left-foot after good work from Boyd in the build-up.
Gayle clipped the outside of the post with a powerful strike with his left-foot after a long clearance from Olejnik picked him out.
Millwall made a double change at the break with Alan Dunne and Martin Woolford introduced from the bench. Boyd saw an effort from 25-yards go wide of the target on 50 minutes after a good run.
On 55 minutes, Posh made it 3-1 as TOMLIN side-footed home from six-yards after good work from Boyd and in the first instance, Ferdinand, who won a tremendous tackle just inside the Millwall half.
On the hour mark, Posh were in dreamland as Nathaniel MENDEZ-LAING cut inside from the left and fired an unstoppable left-foot shot into the top corner. A stunning effort from the winger on his weaker foot.
Millwall had the ball in the back of the net on 67 minutes as Hulse tucked in after Olejnik parried a Keogh effort, but the offside flag came to the rescue of Posh. The hosts were reduced to 10-men on 69 minutes as Lowry was shown a straight red card for hacking down Gayle who was clean through on goal.
Boyd sent an ambitious 35-yard half volley wide of the target on 72 minutes as Forde scrambled across his goal. Tomlin saw an effort cleared off the line before Rowe was denied a second by the legs of Forde as Posh pressed for a fifth.
Mendez-Laing was replaced to a standing ovation by the Posh faithful with Danny Swanson the man introduced from the bench. Olejnik tipped a looping header from Osbourne over the bar before Ferdinand was replaced by Jack Payne.
Posh made it 5-1 a minute before time and it was fitting that BOYD got his name on the scoresheet, toe-poking the ball past Forde after a fine reverse pass from Gayle.
