Miller fired wide of the near post after spinning past Alcock as the home side pressed for a breakthrough. Justin Hoyte fired wide from 20-yards on the quarter hour mark after a poor defensive header clear.
Miller missed a sitter under severe pressure from Little on 23 minutes as Posh failed to clear an Ameobi centre. Ameobi was then smartly denied by Olejnik who did well to keep the ball into his body with McDonald onrushing for the rebound.
Haroun dragged a shot wide of the far post on the half hour as the hosts continued to dominate. Friend limped off to be replaced by Bailey on 32 minutes.
McDonald fired well wide of the target on 35 minutes after Zakuani's header only reached the edge of the area. Rowe glanced a header towards goal moments later, but it was well defended by Bikey before Alcock's drive was well held by Steele.
Grant McCann, who scored two penalties on Saturday, replaced Newell at the interval. Olejnik gathered a McEcheran effort at the second attempt on 49 minutes after the on-loan man let fly from distance with his left foot.
McCann saw a right-foot shot saved by Steele after a good run from Little down the right hand side, which included a combination with Tomlin.
Ameobi dragged a shot well wide of the target on 54 minutes after being afforded time and room 30-yards from goal. A piece of individual magic from Tomlin presented Little with a fine chance at the back post, but the full-back failed to make proper contact and the chance was snuffed out by Steele.
Tomlin fed Gayle moments later, but again the goalkeeper came to the rescue of the hosts, diving to his right to keep out the low drive from the in-form front man.
The home side made a double change with Main and Carayol introduced by Tony Mowbray. Leadbitter fired over from 30-yards after a bit of dallying between McCann and Payne as the ball ran loose.
Haroun wasted a good chance to score on 76 minutes after a good lay off from substitute Main. Tomlin tested Steele with a crisp drive, which the keeper parried as Posh came close to the lead themselves.
Payne produced a superb block to deny Haroun on 80 minutes as the home side came so close to the lead. Swanson replaced Payne on 86 minutes. Ameobi fired over in stoppage time with the hosts appealing for a free kick on the edge of the box.
