A stunner from George Boyd helped Posh record their first home league win.
A superb goal from over 45 yards from George Boyd helped Peterborough United secure their first home league victory of the campaign over Huddersfield Town to lift Darren Ferguson's men off the foot of the Championship table.Saido Berahino had the first effort of the game at a very foggy London Road after excellent approach play by Lee Tomlin, but the on-loan West Bromwich Albion striker could not keep his effort down and Alex Smithies was not called upon to make a save.
Mark Little forced Smithies into a routine stop on 13 minutes after a deep cross by George Boyd. The deadlock was broken on 16 minutes as Berahino fed BOYD, who made no mistake, firing an angled drive across Smithies and into the bottom corner.
It was 2-0 to Posh on 25 minutes and you will not see a better goal all season. BOYD was around 45 yards from goal, no threat you might think? This is Boyd remember, he launched an unbelievable left-foot volley that flew over goalkeeper Smithies and into the back of the net. Better than Boyd against Boston all those years ago. Better than anything you will see.
A good run from Tomlin saw him burst past the full-back with pace and his pull-back found Berahino, but his shot was blocked by Clarke. McCann fired inches wide in first half stoppage time from the edge of the area with two minutes of added time signaled by the fourth official.
It was 3-0 on 48 minutes and it was a first senior goal for youngster Kgosi NTLHE who planted a header past Smithies after glorious work from the hugely impressive Boyd. Huddersfield made a double change moments later with Paul Dixon and Adam Hammill introduced.
The latter, HAMMILL, reduced the arrears on 51 minutes with a fine individual strike, cutting inside from the left and curling a shot past Olejnik and into the back of the net. Norwood fired a free-kick into the wall on 54 minutes after Ntlhe had been penalised for a foul on the edge of the area.
Boyd fired wide of the near post after good pace from Little saw him burst past the full-back for pace. Berahino was close to marking his debut with a goal after a terrible Dixon back-pass, but Smithies did well to deny the front man.
Emile Sinclair replaced the excellent Berahino on 77 minutes as Darren Ferguson made his first substitution of the night. Shaun Brisley headed wide at the far post following a deep Grant McCann corner kick.
Kane Ferdinand replaced the impressive Tomlin on 84 minutes to give some more fresh legs on the pitch. Boyd was denied a deserved hat-trick by a superb stop from Smithies diving to his left as Posh caught Huddersfield on the counter attack.
Clarke sent a looping header over the bar as the fourth official signaled five minutes of added time. Joe Newell replaced McCann with two minutes remaining before the referee brought an end to proceedings as Posh secured their first home league win of the season.
