Festive Cheer As Posh Move Off Bottom

Peterborough United made it three wins in a row, the first time at Championship level since 1993, with an emphatic and richly deserved 3-0 success at Wolverhampton Wanderers, moving off the bottom of the table in the process.

Dwight Gayle, fresh from completing his permanent move from Dagenham and Redbridge, fired over in the early exchanges after good link-up play by George Thorne and George Boyd.

Gayle had another opportunity on 12 minutes after a deft touch from Tomlin, but he fired straight at Ikeme who made a smart stop. The deadlock was broken on 18 minutes as a stunning run and cross from Newell picked out TOMLIN and his fierce left-foot half-volley went in via the underside of the crossbar and Carl Ikeme.

Jermaine Pennant curled a free-kick over the top on 35 minutes as Wolves began to get into the game. Sako was superbly denied by Olejnik who then denied Ward with his legs as the hosts ended the first period well.

Gayle went close on the stroke of half time before referee Mr Heywood brought an to end to proceedings prompting boos from the home faithful.

Tomlin was denied a second goal by a comfortable Ikeme save on 47 minutes. Pennant flashed a shot wide from 20-yards at the other end after a sustained spell of pressure from the hosts.

At the other end, Gayle screwed a shot wide of the target after good hold up play from Tomlin. Substitute Sigurdarson glanced a header wide from a Foley cross on the hour mark as Wolves pressed.

On 69 minutes, Posh were in a dreamland as a low cross from Tomlin was converted at the near post by the in-form Dwight GAYLE.

Fans favourite Jamie O'Hara was introduced on 77 minutes to the home faithful's glee. Pennant booed as he was replaced.
