Posh host Southend United in the first round of the Capital One Cup.

Peterborough United face Southend United in the first round of the Capital One Cup at London Road on Tuesday evening (7.45pm).

The League Two side, who were defeated in the play-off semi-finals by Crewe Alexandra last season, lost their final warm-up friendly ahead of this tie to a Tottenham Hotspur XI at Roots Hall and boss Paul Sturrock will be hoping his side bounce back against Posh.

The Shrimpers lost 6-0 with Harry Kane bagging a hat-trick while Darren Ferguson's men overcame a youthful Manchester United XI 2-0 at London Road.

However, despite those results, Ferguson is expecting a tough encounter: 'Southend have one or two talented individuals in their side and they will provide tough opposition for us, but we are very much looking forward to the game.

'I think my lads relish the competitive nature of the fixture. Pre-season has been long in terms of the fixtures and I think we are all pleased the season is now upon us. The players have trained well, we have worked hard on our shape and we are ready,' Ferguson said.

The Posh boss confirmed that Tyrone Barnett is unlikely to be risked against the Shrimpers, while Emile Sinclair is on course to return at Leicester City on the opening day of the npower Championship campaign.

Daniel Kearns (knee), Nathaniel Mendez-Laing (hamstring), Tommy Rowe (collarbone) and David Hibbert are sidelined due to injury.

Admission prices for this game have been slashed to £15 for adults, £10 for concessions (senior citizens and students) and £5 for under 16s anywhere in the stadium.
