Rugby Borough Women v Posh Women: Match Preview

rugby

Posh make their second trip to the Nationwide Windows Arena of the campaign as Jake Poole's side take on unbeaten Rugby Borough in the second group phase fixture of the FAWNL Cup on Sunday (3pm).

Both teams enjoyed emphatic first group game victories with Rugby hitting double figures against Leicester PGA, while Posh eased to a 6-0 home win over Notts County at PIMS Park.

With the young Foxes left to play in the group, Posh are in a good position to qualify from the group providing they avoid a heavy defeat against Borough, who beat Posh 5-0 on the opening day in the league.

TEAM NEWS

Posh are without centre back Anna Pitt due to suspension, while fellow defender Hayley James is set for an extended spell on the sidelines due to a knee injury. There are a number of players in the group, including Courtney Clarke, who are struggling with knocks or injuries and will be assessed ahead of match day.

MANAGER QUOTES

"Both sides will have learned a lot about each other on the opening day. We felt that we were competitive, but obviously conceded some poor goals. We know it will be a tough game, but we will go there and try and play our game. We have one or two decisions to make when it comes to the XI, but we have players keen to establish themselves in the line-up," Jake Poole said.

Posh Women Suffer Cup Defeat

rugby

Posh Women beaten by Rugby Borough in FAWNL Cup group phase encounter at the Nationwide Windows Arena.

The good news for the Peterborough United Women is that they shouldn't have to return to the Nationwide Windows Arena again this season. Rugby Borough enjoyed an opening day league win over Posh and followed it up with a clinical display in the FAWNL Cup group phase.

Yes, Posh carved out chances in front of goal, with Crista Ganado twice going close alongside substitute Kira Rai late on, but defensively, Jake Poole's side were nowhere near their best and ultimately the hosts were gifted goals.

In fact, the home side only had nine shots on target in the game, yet scored seven times, three in the first half and four after the break to follow up their 10-0 win over Leicester City PGA in their first group game.

Posh have to face the young Foxes in the final group game and should still qualify after beating the other team in the group, Notts County, 6-0 at PIMS Park last month.

After losing skipper Evie Driscoll-King to injury, Posh were always going to face an uphill task, but midfielder Rebecca Mears did a decent job at right-back.

It was MOSBY who opened the scoring, converting from close-range after Posh failed to defend a set-piece before Jess CAMWELL spotted goalkeeper Neive Corry off her line and converted from long-range.

Crook did superbly to keep out Ganado after linking well with Ellie May but on 25 minutes, it was 3-0 as GREENSLADE fired home from close-range.

Crook did well to keep out Ganado again on 29 minutes as Posh again came close to scoring the first goal against Rugby this season and Crook did well again on the stroke of half-time to preserve her clean sheet.

Posh were enjoying their best spell of possession in the game when on 64 minutes, the hosts were awarded a dubious spot-kick with MOSBY converting from 12-yards.

MONCASTER made it 5-0 as she headed home from a corner kick before ROBERTS added a sixth with a composed side-foot volley. MONCASTER got the game's final goal on 92 minutes, moments after Rai had headed wide.

Posh: Corry, Jenkins, Connor, Driscoll-King (sub Mears 12min), Osker, Driscoll (sub Saunders 70min), Brown (sub Rai 46min), Reynolds, Wilshaw (sub Cragg 88min), May, Ganado (sub Andersen 70min).
