Peterborough United Under 18s make the trip down to the south coast on Saturday midday (12pm) with AFC Bournemouth serving as the latest test in the Professional Development League.

Peterborough United Under 18s will look to dust off last weekend’s defeat to Brentford, when they travel south to face AFC Bournemouth.

Bolu Shofowoke found the net on his return to the fold, with his strike acting as a mere consolation for our youngsters who looked to build on the recent performances, including the successes at both Birmingham City and Fleetwood Town.

Saturday’s opponents, meanwhile, suffered a 2-1 defeat to leaders Bristol City last time out, with Pawel Kawosiski’s late strike proving the difference in Dorset.

Our youngsters share an equal head-to-head record with the Cherries, having drawn twice, won once, with as many defeats across the stretch.

TEAM NEWS

Jimmy Unwin has confirmed that his side have picked up no fresh injuries, and expects a similar side to feature as it did last weekend.

Joe Davies and Lucca Mendonca could be in the running after featuring for the Under 21s in midweek.

THE OPPOSITION

AFC Bournemouth are sat fifth in the southern section, having picked up 37 points from 25 league matches. James Lowy’s young Cherries have seen 12 victories, the odd draw, and 12 defeats over the course of the term. Awarded category two status prior to the 2023-24 season, Bournemouth will be looking to mark the club’s highest rank at Under 18 level, having finished in their current position last time around, with a victory on Saturday enough to put them on track for that.

FROM THE MANAGER

Professional Development Phase (Under 18s) Lead Coach Jimmy Unwin said ahead of the game: “We’re looking forward to the game. We’re travelling down with a young squad, so that will be good for their development, and hopefully we can put on a good performance against another really tough side."

Bolu Shofowoke

Peterborough United Under 18s were beaten by the young Cherries as they mounted a second half comeback on Saturday afternoon.

The game started evenly, with both sides enjoying waves of possession, but the hosts seemed to lack the cutting edge when it mattered.

SHOFOWOKE took full advantage to sway the match in favour of our youngsters, freeing up some space before sliding home at the back post in trademark fashion.

Bournemouth looked to rally back instantly when the Cherries’ midfielder won an ariel duel 30-yards out, before advancing forward and taking aim for the far corner – this time, the woodwork came to our aid.

Rylie Fitzpatrick injected fresh momentum down by the touchline, standing up a ball to our goal scorer, who set Max Beech free – yet the finishing touch remained elusive.

The momentum was quickly halted in the second period when our youngsters came under siege almost instantly. A series of opportunities cropped up for the home side, with Ben Westcott doing excellently to keep his clean sheet intact.

The host’s pressure soon told, though, spinning the game on its head with two quick-fire goals; the first on the hour mark, before finding the net three minutes later.

Jimmy Unwin rang in the changes, looking to find a route back into the game, with our youngsters camping further up the field. Shofowoke came closest when his effort was parried out to Benjamin McWilliams-Marcano, who miscued the follow-up.

Instead, the Cherries looked to put the game out of sight down the other end, winning a spot-kick which wrongfooted Westcott to greater the task at hand for Unwin’s side.

The hosts weathered any late pressure to claim all three points down by the south coast.
