Keir Perkins and Tara Kirk first-half goals secure an important victory for Posh Women.

Peterborough United Women recorded back-to-back victories in the FA Women’s National League on Sunday afternoon after a 2-0 win over Sporting Khalsa at the Abbey Lawn following two first-half goals from Tara Kirk and Keir Perkins.

Dan Lawlor’s side started the game strongly and had a great opportunity to break the deadlock on four minutes as Megan Lawlor’s cross found Rachel Lawrence at the back-post, but her side-footed volley hit the side-netting.

However, just three minutes later, Posh broke the deadlock and it was Kirk netting her fourth goal in two league games as Driscoll's low cross found Lawrence, she played it to the feet of Kirk, who turned her defender before firing home from close-range.

Perkins was close to making it two on 13 minutes as her cross nearly dropped into the back of the net. Sporting Khalsa’s Steph Weston created their first opportunity shortly after, but she fired over from inside the box.

The visitors went close again on 20 minutes as Olivia Woolston raced through on-goal, but her effort was cleared away by Mugridge after she chipped the ball over Kira Markwell. Khalsa’s goalkeeper Natalie Hall was forced into a good save on the half an hour mark, showing quick reflexes to push Lawrence’s deflected cross over the bar.

Weston got through the Posh backline, but Mugridge was there once again, producing a great block to deny her effort. Perkins did have the ball in the back of the net on 39 minutes, but the referee penalised the forward for a foul in the build-up.

Posh doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time and Perkins wasn’t going to have this chalked off as Lawlor’s low cross was met by Kirk at the front-post, her effort was saved by the keeper but Perkins was there to fire home the rebound.

Lawlor made a change at the break as Kayleigh Aylmer replaced Lawlor before he was sent off on 53 minutes after two yellow cards in quick succession. Lawrence saw an effort from the edge of the box tipped around the post.

The visitors pushed for a way back into the game as Chelsey Leigh Wright saw an effort fly well over the bar before Weston was inches away from getting a touch on the ball from a free-kick on the right-hand side. Markwell was only tested on 86 minutes as a shot from the edge of the box took a wicked bounce, forcing Posh goalkeeper into a quick save.

Posh XI: Markwell, Lawrence, Mugridge, Connor, Driscoll-King (Curson, 83min), Lawlor (Aylmer, 46min), Steward, Driscoll, Evans (Hendrick, 90min), Perkins, Kirk (Oliveria, 79min).
