Posh Women Action

Posh Women pick up a point on the road in the FA Women’s National League.

Peterborough United Women were held to a 1-1 draw by Sheffield FC Women at the Home of  Football Stadium on Sunday afternoon in the FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands.

Posh got off the mark almost immediately when Tara Kirk opened the scoring for the visitors on the two-minute mark as s cross into the box from Keir Perkins found Tara Kirk, she controlled the ball beautifully before firing her effort past the keeper to give Posh the perfect start.

Dan Lawlor’s side looked to double their lead just two minutes later after a brilliant ball from Cassie Steward found Perkins and she advanced into the box, but her effort was straight at the keeper.

The home side looked to retaliate quickly as Daisy Buxton sent an effort just wide of the post after she advanced behind the Posh defence. Sheffield FC grabbed an equaliser on 13 minutes after a free kick into the area was scrappily knocked over the line despite Evie Driscoll-King’s effort to clear the ball.

After the hosts found the equaliser, neither side created many chances for the remainder of the first half as Jess Driscoll and Perkins both blasted efforts from the edge of the box over the bar.

On 40 minutes, the hosts were gifted an opportunity to take the lead as the referee pointed to the spot after Steward was penalised. Buxton stepped up to take the spot-kick and her effort was expertly saved by Neive Corry, who also managed to make another sublime save to stop the rebound before the ball was cleared.

The second half saw much of the same as both sides struggled to carve out many opportunities on a difficult pitch. Rachel Lawrence had the best chance of the half as Megan Lawlor’s diagonal ball found the midfielder in acres of space inside the box, but her left-footed effort was saved well by the keeper.

On 69 minutes, Sheffield’s Buxton fired an effort over the bar after a miscommunication between Jess Evans and Stacey McConville allowed the forward to win the ball back. Posh pushed for the winner in the closing stages as Driscoll saw an effort blocked after Perkins’ low cross found the midfielder.

McConville’s effort in the final minute of the game looked like it could win it for Posh, but her powerful strike was tipped over the bar by the Sheffield keeper.

Posh XI: Corry, Aylmer, Evans, McConville, Perkins, Steward, Lawlor, Lawrence (Dean, 73min), Driscoll, Driscoll-King, Kirk.
