In our build-up for #10K4Boxing Day, we speak to Dwight Gayle.

Peterborough United entertain Chesterfield on Boxing Day at the ABAX Stadium and as part of our build-up to that Sky Bet League One fixture, theposh.com caught up with former Posh striker Dwight Gayle, a man who has good memories of the day after Christmas.

Gayle was among the scorers on Boxing Day back 2012 as Darren Ferguson's side recorded an impressive 3-0 victory at Wolverhampton Wanderers with Lee Tomlin and Tommy Rowe also on target.

'I remember that day well and the goal that I scored. I remember Joe Newell's cross going all the way across the box and I saw Mark Little getting ready to deliver the ball from the other side so I thought I needed to get to the near post and thankfully I managed the slightest touch on it and divert the ball past the keeper.

'That win was a big one for us. I think winning that game really added to the belief we had gained from previous fixtures. The big turning point for me was Cardiff away, knowing we could beat anyone in the league if we played to our best,' Gayle said.

That victory at Molineux was the third successive league win with an eventful 5-4 win over Bolton Wanderers sandwiched in between the Cardiff success and the 3-0 drubbing of Wolves. Gayle himself had scored in five successive league games and made it six when he netted in the 4-2 defeat at Bristol City.

'I was on a good goalscoring run at that time. I was enjoying my football and the team was creating chances for me every week. We had a good team, Lee Tomlin was a pleasure to play with. He seemed to know where I was on the pitch and always steps ahead of the defences.

'As a striker you need someone like that in your team if you want to score lots of goals. We just had an understanding,' Gayle enthused.

Boxing Day is a traditional day for football. Players and supporters alike look forward to the action and with Posh entertaining Chesterfield and hoping for a big crowd at the ABAX Stadium, Gayle himself knows that the Posh youngsters will be excited by the prospect.

'Playing on Boxing Day is a great experience for young players as it indicates just how beautiful and watched the game is knowing that thousands of people would leave home to come and watch you play. It means a lot to the fans. They love this time of year,' Gayle said.
