Burton v Posh | Match Preview

A look ahead to Saturday’s trip to the Pirelli Stadium.

28 February 2020

Posh travel to Burton Albion to face Nigel Clough’s men in Sky Bet League One action on Saturday.

Peterborough United return to Sky Bet League One action after an enforced break due to the expulsion of Bury Football Club this weekend with Darren Ferguson’s men travelling to the Pirelli Stadium to face Burton Albion (3pm).

The Brewers picked up three points on the road at Southend United last time out and will be looking to build on that success after a difficult start to 2020. Posh were last in action at Fleetwood Town when a goal in each half condemned the club to a 2-1 defeat despite a first goal for Dan Butler.

TEAM NEWS

Striker Ivan Toney serves the second of a two-match ban and misses out while teenage front man Ricky-Jade Jones is a doubt with a knock picked up in the reserve team win over Sheffield United earlier this week.

Defender Frankie Kent is earmarked for a return to action against Bolton Wanderers in mid-March. He underwent a successful knee operation and is making good progress as part of his rehabilitation. Former Posh defender Colin Daniel could line up against his former employees with Richard Nartey a major doubt for the Brewers.

The young Chelsea-loanee has returned to his parent club for treatment on a calf injury he picked up away at Ipswich Town two weeks ago.

The remaining doubts are John Brayford, Stephen Quinn and Jake Buxton. John Brayford picked up a knock on his knee during our win at Southend United, whilst Quinn also picked up knocks in the same match, whilst a groin problem persists. Club captain Buxton is still a doubt due to a rib injury that has forced him to miss games periodically.

FROM THE GAFFER

“Burton Albion are a tricky side to come up against because on their day they are a very good side with plenty of movement and attacking threat. They had a good away win last time out and will be looking to build on that. We have had a break which has been well timed in terms of rest and recovery but now we need to focus. We have to win a lot of our remaining games and that starts on Saturday,” Darren Ferguson said.

HEAD TO HEAD

Despite first meeting 15 years ago in the FA Cup, the Brewers and Posh have met only eight times in total, with three of those meetings coming in the aforementioned FA Cup. Overall, our head-to-head form against Peterborough is three wins, one draw and four defeats.

Of the five league meetings, all have come in League One, but the Brewers are without a win against Posh in the last three meetings.

The reverse fixture, a 1-0 away defeat on November 23, 2019, saw the Brewers dominant much of the game but lose only to a 25-yard screamer from Ward in the dying minutes of the game.

TICKET NEWS

The game is not all-ticket for Posh supporters, which means pay on the day is available. Fans are advised that they can play cash on the terrace turnstiles. There is a £2 price rise on the day. Tickets remain on sale until 2pm on Friday at www.theposhtickets.com, via the Ticketmaster hotline 0844 847 1934 (calls cost 7ppm plus your network access fee) and in person at the Weston Homes Stadium Box Office. Mo Eisa was on target for Posh but it was not enough for all three points as Brewers peg Posh back.

Peterborough United were forced to settle for a point following a 1-1 draw at the Pirelli Stadium as Mo Eisa’s goal was cancelled out by skipper John Brayford, who powered home a header from a set-piece midway through the second period.

After a cagy start, it was Posh who had the first effort of the game, Jack Taylor unleashing a powerful drive from 25-yards which keeper Kieran O’Hara beat away to safety. John-Joe O’Toole was cautioned for a foul on Mo Eisa on 28 minutes.

Szmodics saw a shot well blocked by O’Toole on 33 minutes after skipping inside a couple of challenges. Posh screamed for a penalty as Beevers appeared to be held in the box but nothing was given by referee Mr Huxtable.

Two minutes of injury time was indicated by the fourth official before the referee brought an end to proceedings with Posh frustrated that they hadn’t made the most of the play that they had put together in a wind-assisted first period.

Posh opened the scoring on 52 minutes and it was a fine strike from Mo EISA who collected a pass from Dembele and fired low into the bottom corner from just inside the box. Nigel Clough made his first change moments later with Reece Hutchinson replacing ex-Posh defender Colin Daniel.

Eisa had the ball in the net again on 55 minutes as he rifled past O’Hara at his near post but the referee had spotted a foul by the striker in the build-up. Dembele was cautioned for diving on the hour mark right in front of the fourth official.

The home side levelled on 66 minutes as a corner kick was headed home at the back post by skipper John BRAYFORD. Thompson was cautioned for a foul on 69 minutes as the home side began to get on top following their equaliser.

Darren Ferguson made his first change on 71 minutes with Josh Knight replacing Szmodics. Pym did well to hold a low effort from Powell moments later as Posh prepared their next change. O’Hara did well to keep out an effort from Eisa before Brayfoot hacked clear as the ball ran loose.

Akins dragged a shot wide of the far post after finding a little space as the game entered the final 10 minutes. Fraser was a whisker away from finding a winner on 88 minutes, but his curler flashed inches wide of the far post.
