Charlton v Posh | Match Preview

A look ahead to Tuesday night's game.

21 August 2018

Posh continue their Sky Bet League One campaign at the Valley against Charlton Athletic.

Peterborough United travel to the Valley this evening to face Charlton Athletic in Sky Bet League One action (7.45pm) looking to make it four league wins from four following victories against Bristol Rovers, Rochdale and Luton Town.

The Addicks go into this encounter off the back of a 1-1 draw at Accrington Stanley but despite an indifferent start, Lee Bowyer’s men are still among the favourites to clinch promotion from League One at the end of the campaign.

TEAM NEWS

Boss Steve Evans hinted in his pre-match press conference that he will freshen up his starting line-up with midfielders Mark O’Hara and Siriki Dembele both under consideration after being replaced in the second half on Saturday. Both missed training ahead of the game with knocks.

Charlton could make changes following the 1-1 draw with Accrington but could include former Posh striker Nicky Ajose in attack.

MANAGER QUOTES

“Charlton are a good side and in Lee Bowyer, they have a manager that I have a lot of time for. He was an excellent player and he has the opportunity to lead a good football club. We will probably look to make changes, but we will keep that under our hat. We will go there and try and win the game, that is our mentality,” Evans said.

FROM THE OPPOSITION

“It’ll be another physical game They’re a very, very big side and they’re very dangerous at set-plays. They’ve scored a couple of goals from them already and they like to put crosses into the box. One of their midfielders arrives late in the box, so they have done well so far. Everyone wants to get off to a good start and they have done.

“I’m disappointed that we have only got four points, I think we should have at least seven. We should have won on Saturday. Peterborough are on nine but I don’t see why we can’t, with our own crowd behind us, go and win the game,” Charlton boss Lee Bowyer said.

TICKET NEWS

Tickets went off sale at 12pm on Tuesday but the game is not all-ticket and fans can purchase tickets at the Valley. A total of 420 were sold in advance.

MAN IN THE MIDDLE

James Linnington will be the match referee.

On-loan Nottingham Forest striker Jason Cummings nets late winner as Posh make it four league wins from four.

Peterborough United secured a fourth Sky Bet League One victory in a row with a 1-0 victory at the Valley against Charlton Athletic on Tuesday evening with Jason Cummings netting an 88th minute spot-kick in front of over 700 ecstatic Posh fans.

Cummings converted from 12-yards after Ivan Toney was bundled over in the penalty box following a superb left-footed cross from fellow substitute Marcus Maddison. Posh dominated for long spells, particularly in the first period with Rhys Bennett’s powerful header striking the outside of the upright.

Bennett also saw a powerful header go over the bar from another set-piece while Jason Naismith also went close although his effort would have been chalked off for offside. Goalkeeper Aaron Chapman was only called upon to deny Lyle Taylor’s deflected shot before the break.

Both managers were cautioned for dissent by the official with Steve Evans bemoaning the treatment handed out to Siriki Dembele who was chopped down twice in the opening five minutes of the contest, drawing bookings from the referee.

Dembele wasted a golden chance to give Posh a deserved lead when he raced onto a Toney flick in the second period, but his low shot was saved by the keeper. Maddison was cautioned for dissent with Taylor also getting booked for tossing the ball away in anger.

George Cooper, Toney and Maddison all came on as Posh pressed for a breakthrough and they got the reward when Toney was shoved in the back in the box. CUMMINGS sent the keeper the wrong way from the spot before celebrating with the Posh fans.

Colin Daniel produced a superb last gasp block while the entire back four produced a fine display of defending, protecting Chapman who wasn’t called upon to make a serious save in the entire 90 minutes.
