NCS Summer Students Graduate1 August 2017
Following on from the conclusion of the NCS Wave 1 programme this week, first team player Callum Chettle attended the Graduation evening to hand out certificates to the 15-17 year olds taking part.
NCS is a government funded programme aimed at 15-17 year olds. The aim of the programme is to bring young people together from various different backgrounds and offer them new opportunities as they take on new challenges, new skills and engage with new people. Enabling these young people to discover new talents and uncover their potential while having fun and enjoying themselves, the scheme has proved to be a resounding success once more.
The programme runs over a 4 week period in the summer holidays which consists of two residential weeks Monday – Friday and two weeks 9-4pm in and around the local community. The idea is for young people to gain confidence and independence as they learn to communicate with local organisations as long side creating, planning and delivering a social action project in a group of 15.
Social action projects in the past have seen young people raise hundreds of pounds for charity as well as volunteer their own time to make a difference in their community. The government pay roughly £1500 for each individual young person to take part in NCS, but the most you will ever have to pay is £50. This covers all food, transport and accommodation for the two residential weeks. If you receive government support or free school meals then the cost of the programme can be completely free.
A break-down of the 4 week NCS programme is as follows:
Phase 1: Away Residential – The young people are taken to an outdoor activity centre where they will take part in fun, adrenaline filled activities such as canoeing, kayaking, abseiling, high ropes, caving and lots more. It gives young people the chance to take on new challenges, conquer fears and make new friends along the way.
Phase 2: Home Residential – This time, the young people stay away at the Lily Pad Cottages where they gain new skills such as independence and confidence. Young people are allocated into a cottage and given a budget where they buy and cook their own food. They have to budget 5 days’ worth of food and learn how to cook as a group. During the day, life skills will be taught where local companies come in and deliver a workshop to allow young people to take that next step into adulthood. The companies include CV and employability, road safety, budgeting and activities which require integrating with the local community.
Phase 3: Plan and Deliver a Social Action Project – this is the opportunity for the young people to showcase the skills they have learnt over the past two weeks and put it into planning and delivering a social action project in their community. The young people are required to talk to different charities and organisations and effectively plan a project which will create a long lasting legacy within the community. This is the most rewarding part of the programme where young people see themselves giving something back to the community as well as volunteering hours.
Phase 4: Graduation – This is an opportunity for friends and family of the young people to come together to celebrate the fantastic achievement of completing NCS and becoming a new Graduate. The young person will receive a signed certificate from the Prime Minister and this will be presented to them by a Peterborough United First Team Player. The young people will relive the memories they have created on NCS and share their achievements with their fellow friends.
