Youth Team In Cup Glory

Posted on: Thu 25 Feb 2010

The Peterborough United youth team are into the semi-finals of Football League Youth Cup after victory at Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday.

The youngsters will face an away fixture with either Gillingham or Millwall in the semi-finals with Queens Park Rangers facing Exeter City in the other Southern Section tie.

It was goalkeeper Sam Cole who was the hero as he saved two penalty kicks in the shoot-out to send Posh through after Joe Newell's early goal was cancelled out late on by a set-piece Wycombe goal.

Posh captain Carl Piergianni in action against Wycombe felt the success was deserved: 'It was very pleasing to win the game as I felt we played particularly well. We took the lead through a good goal and it was very frustrating to concede, especially as it came from a set-piece.

'We practice penalties in training at the end of the sessions and the lads kept their nerve. It is great to be into the semi-finals and we are looking forward to the tie, whoever we may come up against.

'Since the turn of the year we have had some encouraging results, but not only that, but we have been putting in some good performances. As a defender, it is also pleasing that we have had some clean sheets and that provides a good base to start from,' Piergianni said.

The semi-final has to be played before Monday 15th March.
