Youngsters Defeated In FA Youth Cup
Mansfield Town staged a fine comeback to beat Peterborough United in the first round of the FA Youth Cup after an entertaining encounter at Field Mill on Wednesday night with the tie eventually decided in extra time.
David Oldfield's men had looked on course for progression into round two after racing into a 2-0 lead, but the Stags dug in and staged a spirited comeback and eventually claimed a 3-2 success.
Posh took the lead through Carl Piergianni who finished from close-range after good build-up play and when fellow defender Josh Jirbandey converted from a similar distance following a set-piece, nobody would have expected Mansfield to fight back.
However fight back they did and Connor Higginson reduced the arrears with a fine strike from just outside the penalty area. Charlie Dove went close from 35-yards for Posh while Sam Cole did well at the other end to deny Higginson a second.
The Mansfield striker did get his rewards moments later though, bursting past two defenders before slotting the ball past Cole. Jirbandey saw an effort cleared off the line before the tie moved into extra time.
Posh struck a post but they were made to pay for that miss as Grant Ryan headed home a Higginson cross and Mansfield were through to the second round. Reaction to the defeat will be uploaded to theposh.com on Thursday.
