Batt Scores Twice In Reserve Victory

Posted on: Thu 01 Oct 2009

The Peterborough United second string claimed an impressive 5-2 victory over Norwich City at London Road in the latest Totesport Football Combination League fixture.

Shaun Batt staked a claim for a first team spot against Reading by scoring twice and creating another as Posh overcame the Canaries.

Posh opened the scoring on two minutes as Dominic GREEN floated a superb free-kick into the top corner after Batt had been felled on the edge of the area.

The lead was doubled on seven minutes after a mix-up in the Norwich defence allowed BATT to round the goalkeeper and slot the ball into an empty net.

Norwich reduced the arrears following an excellent strike from former Blackpool midfielder Wes HOOLAHAN, which flew into the top corner.

Batt and Ben Wright both wasted chances to extend the lead while Cody McDonald saw an ambitious 30-yard volley fly just over the crossbar.

On 38 minutes, Posh made it 3-1 as Dean Keates played in BATT who coolly fired the ball past Declan Rudd.

Jamie Day curled a shot inches past the post on 42 minutes while Posh had appeals for a spot-kick turned down after Batt was pulled down by Gary Doherty.

Simon Whaley missed a good chance just after half-time before WRIGHT made it 4-1 with an excellent finish with the inside of his right boot after a flowing Posh move.

Norwich reduced the arrears to 4-2 on 80 minutes as Josh DAWKIN rounded McKeown and rolled the ball into the gaping goal.

The scoring was complete in stoppage time as Batt ran down the right hand side and delivered a low cross to substitute Nathan KORENTENG who squeezed the ball past Rudd via the post.

Posh: McKeown, Austin, Day, Pearce, Blanchett (sub Andrew 75min), Green (sub Korenteng 60min), Rowe, Torres (sub Crook 60min), Batt, Wright, Keates. Unused subs: Appiah, Piergianni.

Norwich: Rudd, Brindley, Habergham, Doherty, Stephens, Dumic, Whaley, Maric, McDonald, Hoolahan, Dawkin. Subs: Kelly, Wiggins, Osemwegie, Clarke.
