The Peterborough United second string overcame Grays Athletic 3-0 in the latest Pontins Holiday Combination League fixture on Monday with defender Shane Blackett scoring the pick of the goals after making a marauding run from the back.

The former Dagenham and Redbridge centre back burst out of the back-line, beat two defenders and drilled a low 20-yard effort into the bottom corner of the net to put the seal on a comfortable win.

Adam Newton gave Posh the lead from close-range after a low centre from Jack Lyons and he doubled the advantage with a superb solo goal, the winger tricking his way past the full-back and curling a left-foot shot past the goalkeeper and into the far corner.

Rendell was twice denied by fine saves by the Grays goalkeeper while Daniel Blanchett fired straight at the shot-stopper after being played in by Scott Ginty. Blackett sealed the victory five minutes from time after racing from the back and firing into the corner.

Grays looked decent in possession, but goalkeeper James McKeown was rarely threatened and had a comfortable afternoon in difficult conditions. Scott Mitchell made things tick for Posh in midfield while Charlie Lee put in an energetic display for an hour.

Rendell grew in stature as the game progressed while youngsters Sam Gaughran, Ginty, Danny Andrew and Callum Reed all got minutes under their belt. Liam Hatch missed the game due to injury but is expected to be fit for the trip to Milton Keynes Dons.

Posh: McKeown, Reed, Blackett, Williams, Smith (sub Andrew 46min), Blanchett, Lee (sub Gaughran 60min), Mitchell, Newton, Lyons (sub Ginty 68min), Rendell. Unused subs: Webb, Gourlay.
