Peterborough United reserves claimed a 2-1 victory over a strong Southend side in the Pontins Holiday Combination League at Roots Hall, with Alfie Potter returning from a loan spell at Grays Athletic to score the winner for Posh.

Posh went 1-0 up on the 5 minute mark with a goal from youth team player Sam Gaughran (pictured) who coolly slotted home a right footed shot. Southend piled on the pressure in the second half and earned an equaliser on 58 minutes but Posh managed to grab a winner 15 minutes from time with a Chris Whelpdale shot deflecting into the goal by Potter.

Reserve team manager Simon Clark said: 'This was a good opportunity for some of the youth team players to get involved. We had a good mixture of youth and members of the first team and I think we deserved the win. It was a high tempo game and they had spells where they kept the ball well, but overall I think we deserved the winner and I am very pleased with the performance.'

Youth team defender Darren Gourley suffered a knee injury in the game and looks set to be sidelined for a few weeks. The youngster will have a consultation on his injury tomorrow where a further assessment will be made.

Posh: McKeown, Reed, Gourlay (sub Andrews), Gaughran, Blanchett, Whelpdale, Crook, Gain, Potter, Howe, Lyons (sub Rogers).
