Boyd Wants Cup Progress

Posted on: Tue 10 Aug 2010

The Carling Cup competition is a very important one to Peterborough United winger George Boyd. Ahead of tonight's clash with Rotherham United, Boyd recalled last season's progress in the competition, which was finally curtailed by Premier League side Blackburn Rovers.

Posh defeated Wycombe Wanderers, Ipswich Town and Newcastle United in the competition before being beaten 5-2 by Blackburn at Ewood Park in a tie that saw goalkeeper Joe Lewis dismissed.

'I am looking forward to tonight's game. We performed well in this competition last season and I do think it allows you to test yourselves against stronger opposition very early on.

'We put in good performances against Ipswich and Newcastle last season and had it not been for a bit of a harsh sending off, we may have got a better result against Blackburn.

'We were in that contest, but Joe was sent off and we were always up against it. Hopefully we can make a good start in the competition this evening.

'Rotherham will be tricky opposition because they will no doubt try and defend, but we have the ability to break them down if we remain patient.

'It was a good start to the season on Saturday and the supporters played a massive part in that. I am sure there will be a decent crowd tonight, it is always a good atmosphere on an evening game, and hopefully we can progress,' Boyd said.
