Exclusive: Boyd Agrees New Contract

Posted on: Sat 10 Jul 2010

There have been many exciting arrivals during the summer at London Road, but chairman Darragh MacAnthony has arguably completed his best piece of business after agreeing a new three-year contract with highly-rated fans favourite George Boyd.

After a fantastic three years at the football club, the consensus among supporters would be that Boyd would leave in the summer, but after discussions in Portugal, a contract has been agreed and the winger will formally sign the paperwork on Wednesday night ahead of the friendly with West Ham United, a perfect way to celebrate our 50-year anniversary.

Chairman Darragh MacAnthony said: 'Four or five weeks ago, George and his representatives came to us to talk about this coming season. I honestly don't that George would be signing this contract had it not been for the manager Gary Johnson. He knows that Gary will play football the right way and he is excited about the future. He is fully focussed on this coming season and we will be playing to his strengths.

'I am delighted that everything has been sorted out. I didn't think we would get to this point where we sat around the table, I made him an offer, there was no room for negotiations on it, he appreciated the offer and at around 9.30pm on Thursday night, it was all agreed. I am a big fan of George Boyd and I know the supporters are too,' MacAnthony said.

Boyd said: 'The chairman made me a great offer to stay and I firmly believe this club is going places and I want to be a part of that. If I didn't believe we would get promotion back to the Championship this season then it would have been far tougher to sign, but I have seen the players train out in Portugal and we have an excellent squad.

'Not only that, but manager Gary Johnson has demonstrated to me what he is all about and I am excited to work under him. I think we have a better squad now than when we achieved the back to back promotions and the team spirit is coming back to that level now as well, so it is all positive for the future.

'The fans have also played a massive part. Even when I was with Nottingham Forest last season, the supporters at Peterborough were first class and I cannot wait for the new campaign to start so I can be fully focussed on my football again,' Boyd said.
