Peterborough United striker Aaron Mclean is set to miss the rest of the season after an MRI scan revealed he had torn part of his cartilage in his left knee with medical experts predicting up to six weeks out of action for the former Grays Athletic front man.

Mclean sustained the injury during a routine exercise in training and will undergo an operation on Thursday morning at the Fitzwilliam Hospital. He is devastated by the news, but is hoping the operation is a success and he can return before the end of the season.

'We were doing a shooting practice and I opened up to side foot the ball across goal. I landed on my foot awkwardly, twisted it and I think that is where the tear has occurred. I had an MRI scan and that has shown the damage and I need to have an operation.

'The physio has said that I will be out for between four and six weeks, but obviously I hope it is a lot sooner than that. Obviously I am very disappointed, I had just got in the team and started playing and it has been a very stop start season for me for one reason or another, so obviously it is very disappointing that my season is probably going to be over.

'It is a bit frustrating that this has come about in such a freak accident. It was painful straight away, I couldn't walk on it properly and I knew I had sustained some damage. I would love to be back before the end of the season, I want to play my part as much as possible in the final games, but I will have to wait and see how my recovery goes,' Mclean said.
