Whelpdale Set To Be Used In Advanced Role
Peterborough United manager Jim Gannon has hinted in his pre-match press conference that Chris Whelpdale will be used in a more advanced role following the arrival of Mark Little.
Whelpdale has been primarily used at right-back in recent weeks with Reuben Reid deployed on the right hand side of the attack, but with Reid struggling with injury and Kerrea Gilbert also doubtful, Gannon expects a change in position for the former Billericay man.
'Chris has done well at right back for us, but he can't also play on the right hand side of midfield as well, so Mark's arrival allows him to be used further forward.
'Chris showed at Swansea late on that he can get crosses into the box and beat the full-back and his emphasis will be on attack.
'We have Kerrea and Reuben struggling a bit with injuries, so we knew we had to strengthen the right hand side and that was my thinking in bringing in Mark.
'Mark is a player I know well. I have seen him play for Wolverhampton Wanderers at this level and I have seen him play for Northampton and Chesterfield. He is a solid right-back who can extend and get forward and I am sure once he gets some matches under his belt we will see him both defend well but also get forward and support the attack,' Gannon said.
The Posh boss also revealed that Scott Griffiths (lower back), Exodus Geohaghon (foot) and Josh Simpson (thigh) remain doubts, although the latter is expected to recover in time for Saturday's clash with Coventry City.
'Josh played very well in the system against Ipswich Town and it would be good to have him back in the squad. It is a shame that Jake Livermore has been recalled, but what a wonderful opportunity for the lad, the prospect of possibly being involved in the first team at Spurs is a great one for him,' Gannon added.
