Captaincy A Proud Moment For Lewis

Posted on: Sun 28 Feb 2010

Peterborough United boss Jim Gannon handed goalkeeper Joe Lewis the captains arband in the absence of George Boyd for Saturday's fixture at Swansea City and the shot-stopper put in one of his best displays of the campaign.

Lewis made a string of stunning saves and was commanding at crosses and vocal with support to his team-mates during the 1-0 defeat at the Liberty Stadium.

He admits that he was a proud man to lead the team out, but was disappointed with the 1-0 reverse against a side pushing for promotion.

'It was a great moment to lead the team out and a very proud one too, but it is not one that I can remember too fondly because at the end of the day, we were beaten.

'It is disappointing because we had enough of the ball in the game to cause them problems, but we lacked that real spark going forward.

'To not win a game away from home all season is very disappointing and we have to go into the away games between now and the end of the campaign with a bit of confidence.

'Swansea are a good side, but they didn't really cause too many problems in term of opening us up. I was happy with the saves I had to make, but that is my job,' Lewis said.

Gannon explained his reasons for handing Lewis the captaincy in the post-match press conference. 'With George ill, I had a look at the players I had out there and Joe was the choice I went for. He is a vocal goalkeeper and I thought he took that onto the field and put in a good performance.'
