Posh v Cardiff City: The Match Preview

Posted on: Sun 27 Dec 2009

Peterborough United will have the chance to banish the memory of the 2-0 defeat at promotion-chasing West Bromwich Albion as they face another side with aspirations for Premier League Football next season at London Road on Bank Holiday Monday (3pm).

Cardiff City were on the receiving end of possibly the biggest upset of the weekend when struggling Plymouth Argyle recorded a shock 1-0 win at the new Cardiff Stadium thanks to a goal six minutes from time from Gary Sawyer.

TEAM NEWS

Mark Cooper admitted after the defeat at the Hawthorns that his side are carrying a few bumps and bruises and also revealed that he could make several changes in all areas of the team for the visit of the Bluebirds.

Cardiff did everything but score against Plymouth, so Dave Jones is not expected to make any rash decisions following that defeat, but has promised changes. Michael Chopra hasn't scored for two months but is still a major threat at this level.

MANAGER QUOTES

'I was disappointed with the way we conceded the goals at the Hawthorns, defenders cannot just dangle their legs out and expect that to be good enough. We gave in too easily and that needs to stop, but we have an ideal opportunity to put that right with a game so quickly,' Cooper said.

'I was going to make changes anyway, and there will be some now. There aren't any injuries or knocks, just bruied egos and pride for one or two of my players who aren't as good as they think they are. When you get a kick in the teeth in football it's how you respond that's important, and I'll be looking for a response in 48 hours at Peterborough,' Jones said.

STAT ATTACK

The Bluebirds have won only one of their last 15 matches against Peterborough and have not managed an away win against them for 23 years.

Posh are unbeaten in three home league games but are bottom of the Championship and in desperate need of a victory - especially in light of that win by Plymouth at Cardiff.

Posh's position is perilous, but all is not lost. They are only four points from safety, and 12 of the 30 teams in the bottom three at the end of the last 10 calendar years have gone on to escape relegation.
