Whelpdale Disappointed With Draw

Posted on: Sat 05 Dec 2009

Winger Chris Whelpdale insisted that the 2-2 draw with Swansea City, the second successive week that Peterborough United have been involved in that scoreline, was two points dropped.

Aaron Mclean netted a 95th minute equaliser for Mark Cooper's men, but Posh dominated the second period against the Swans and led through Whelpdale's volley before two Lee Trundle goals gave the visitors the lead.

'The lads are disappointed in the dressing room because we know that it is two points dropped, it doesn't matter that we equalised late on, we had enough chances to win the game.

'We wanted to stay in the game during the first half and it was more of a containing job, but we didn't do particularly well when we had the ball. They kept it for long periods and when we had the ball we gave it away.

'I started the game centrally and it is the first time I have played in that role, but I enjoyed it, it allows you to get your foot in and make a few tackles and sometimes when you play out wide the game can pass you by.

'My goal was obviously a pleasing one for me, it was a bit fortunate in the way it bounced my way and then I think the goalkeeper has pushed it into the top corner, but they all count.

'We looked comfortable at 1-0, we had one or two good chances to make it two and we need to learn how to kill games off because at 1-0 it is never over and Swansea changed things around and Trundle caused us problems.

'When it went to 2-1, we never stopped believing and I think we got our rewards when Aaron scored. In the end, it was vital we didn't lose the game, but we obviously wanted all three points,' Whelpdale said.

In the second half, Whelpdale won all of his headers against the full-back and a lot of attacks began when from goal-kicks by Joe Lewis.

'I went up for the first header and my timing was quite good and I think I got a bit carried away, but it is nice to have that side of my game and it was enjoyable to be so involved,' Whelpdale added.
