Newcastle v Posh: The Match Preview

Posted on: Fri 06 Nov 2009

Peterborough United make the long trip north to face Newcastle United in the Coca-Cola Championship on Saturday afternoon (3pm).

Darren Ferguson's men will be looking to put on a good performance at St. James Park, but Newcastle are in good form with a 1-0 win at Sheffield United their latest victory.

TEAM NEWS

Posh are without the services of Tom Williams (ankle), but midfielder Paul Coutts is back in the squad. Doubts remain over Craig Mackail-Smith's fitness, while several other players have knocks they are trying to shake off.

Newcastle welcome back influential defender Steven Taylor to the squad after he missed the 1-0 win at Sheffield United. Taylor was missing with a hamstring injury.

MANAGER QUOTES

'I was at Bramall Lane and in the end Newcastle won comfortably. They have some very strong players and they are very well organised. Obviously it's the toughest match we could have, but every team has weaknesses and Newcastle are no exception.

'It's up to us to exploit them and we did some work on it yesterday and we will do some more work every day this week. The Newcastle home record doesn't concern me.They don't let many goals in, but my team can score against anyone. I'm not concerned about our attacking play at all. We obviously have to tighten up at the other end and if we can do that we can win up there,' Ferguson said.

ONE TO WATCH

Striker Andy Carroll is proving a handful for defenders in the Championship to mark, he is a physical presence and is not only decent in the air, but is good with the ball at his feet. The local lad was impressive against Sheffield United on Monday night and was named Man of the Match.
