Mclean: 'Too Many Players Didn't Turn Up'

Posted on: Mon 28 Sep 2009

Striker Aaron Mclean pulled no punches after Peterborough United's disappointing 2-0 defeat at Blackpool in the Coca-Cola Championship.

The front man believes too many of the starting line-up 'didn't turn up' and insists that the team need to find consistency if they are going to compete at Championship level.

'We were nowhere near the standards we have set ourselves and it is desperately disappointing. Too many of the team didn't turn up and that was frustrating.V 'The minimim that is required is work-rate and I don't think we did enough in that respect as a team and when you concede two goals in the first 10 minutes of a match you give yourselves a mountain to climb.

'They were poor goals to concede and when you start a game like that, you have no real chance of getting anything from the match,' Mclean said.

Club captain Russell Martin echoed the comments of Mclean, but is confident the team can bounce back when they entertain Plymouth Argyle on Tuesday night at London Road.

'I think we can put it down to a bad day at the office and move on from it.We had gone into the game on the back of two good performances, the second half against Reading and the full 90 minutes against Newcastle United, but were nowhere near good enough at Blackpool.

'We still had chances, but when you go 2-0 down inside the first 10 minutes, you know you have problems and it allowed Blackpool to play with that freedom.

'However, that is gone now, we have to move on from it. We have back-to-back home matches against Plymouth and Nottingham Forest and we want to get some points on the board before the international break,' Martin said.
