Whelpdale In Contention For Starting Berth

Posted on: Thu 10 Sep 2009

Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson has revealed that winger Chris Whelpdale is 'very much in his plans' for Saturday's Coca-Cola Championship clash at Queens Park Rangers (3pm).

Whelpdale, who has missed the season to date following a hernia operation, scored on his return to action in the reserves this week and Ferguson admits he has given him a selection headache.

'Chris was excellent in the reserves and has trained very well and I would have no hesitation in putting him straight into the starting line-up.

'He was tremendous last year and gives us something different on the right hand side. He is more tactically aware and does help out the full-back a bit more, but Shaun Batt is in possession of the shirt and I have always said that players will not be dropped unless their performances are not at the required standard.

'Shaun scored a good goal against Crystal Palace and caused them problems when he attacked the full-back, so it is a tough decision for me this weekend, but those tough decisions are what I am paid to make.

'Jamie Day also impressed in the reserves this week and has trained well so he will be in the squad too. It is great to have those two back available for selection,' Ferguson said.
