Mackail-Smith Opens Goal-Scoring Account

Posted on: Sun 16 Aug 2009

Peterborough United striker Craig Mackail-Smith scored his first goal at Championship level as Darren Ferguson's men recorded a 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday at London Road.

Mackail-Smith levelled just after the hour mark with a determined header at the back post to cancel out the opener scored by James O'Connor in the first half.

'I am delighted to be off and running for the new season and I have already equalled the amount of goals I scored with my head last season. The only header I scored last season was against Brighton, so it is nice to get one with my head on Saturday!

'It was a great ball in by Tom Williams to be fair and I just managed to get above the full-back and obviously it was nice to see it go in.

'I think the lads are a bit disappointed not to win the game and it is down to myself and Aaron Mclean to convert our chances. That is obvious at this level.

'We are working hard on our finishing in training, we both want to improve in that area and I have to be honest, I really should of done better with the chance just after half-time.

'The postives to take from the game far outweight the negatives though. We got a point, we are off and running and we now need to take that into the game with West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday night.
