Ferguson Happy With Away Point

Posted on: Wed 18 Feb 2009

Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson was pleased with his side's performance in the 1-1 draw at Tranmere Rovers, a result which consolidated the club's position in third place in Coca-Cola League One.

Posh fell behind, but a goal from Craig Mackail-Smith, his 21st of the campaign, earned a point for the visitors. George Boyd rattled the post with a stunning 25-yard shot in the second half, while Tranmere had the ball in the back of the net deep into stoppage time, but it was ruled out for a push on Gabriel Zakuani.

'I thought we deserved a point from the game and we created enough chances to have won the game. Tranmere is a very difficult place to come, they have an excellent home record and we knew that we would be in for a tough evening, but I thought we played some good football at times.

'We didn't really get going in the first half an hour and that is why I made the tactical change by bringing Lee Frecklington on for Chris Whelpdale. We changed to a system that we have been working on and I am pleased we have an alternative to our normal formation that can be successful.

'We got more of the ball when we changed it, Lee showed some neat touches on the ball and we got the ball into some dangerous areas. They put us under a bit of pressure in the second period, but I felt we coped with the threat and I have to say that Joe Lewis was magnificent.

'His handling was superb, he has worked very hard and I was pleased for him. I thought the defence played well as a unit and it is a good point for us given the other results on the night,' Ferguson told theposh.com.
