Fry Blasts U's Director Over Rendell Deal

Posted on: Thu 08 Jan 2009

Peterborough United Director of Football Barry Fry has blasted Cambridge United director George Rolls over the proposed loan signing of striker Scott Rendell, which has fallen through in the last 24 hours.

Both clubs announced that the front man had joined the Blue Square Premier side on-loan until the end of the season earlier this month, but Cambridge released a statement on Wednesday stating the deal had fallen through because of the 'financial demands' from Posh.

Fry, speaking to theposh.com, said: 'George Rolls telephoned me after their home game with Stevenage Borough when I was on my way back from the Cheltenham Town fixture on Sunday 28th December. George stated that Cambridge must keep Scott Rendell on-loan and asked what it would take for the deal to be completed.

'I told George that a £25,000 loan fee and a £25,000 promotion bonus would be required. This was because Cambridge had already bid £100,000 up front with a £25,000 promotion bonus plus other add ons to make the deal a permanent one. He stated that Cambridge had received £350,000 which they had received on deposit for Reading buying out the sell-on clause for Dave Kitson.

'George told me he would ring me back after discussing the fee with his directors. Less than 10 minutes later, he telephoned me back and said they had unanimously agreed to the deal. George told me that he had informed Scott that the deal was completed so that he could stay at the club until the end of the campaign.

'George arranged to come to London Road on the 2nd January to sign the paperwork and bring the money. All of the forms were waiting for him, but we received a text message from him stating that he had an urgent business appointment and rescheduled for Monday 5th January. I haven't heard from George since speaking to him on 28th December.

'During this time, Scott has been at the Abbey Stadium where he has been hanging around waiting to sign the forms. He has been left frustrated because nothing has happened. Scott's agent is very disappointed that George has also moved the goalposts with the player's personal terms.'
