Craig Morgan has been handed the Peterborough United captain's armband as the team prepare for life in Coca-Cola League One.

Morgan was not expecting to be given the chance to lead the team ahead of the new season but is relishing the opportunity to prove and establish himself as the new captain.

'It was a nice surprise to be given the chance by the Gaffer to prove myself, I wasn't expecting to be given the captaincy at all. He told me that I had matured as a player and ultimately thinks that I am capable of doing the job and I am very happy that I have been given the opportunity.'

Morgan has never had the honour of being a club captain before, he has however captained his country, Wales, at youth level and aims to draw on his experience and the experience of his fellow team mates to ensure that the team are as successful as possible in the coming season.

'A good captain needs to perform every week and remain consistent. Everyone looks up to you so you need to be helping the team and doing what is best for them. It is important to be talking all of the time, that's the main issue and I expect everyone to play their part this season. I want all 11 bodies on the pitch to act as leaders and to contribute. It is the best way we can all work as a team.'

Morgan is more than aware of the challenges the team will face this season and is hoping that the pre-season games will give them a chance to test themselves against some difficult opposition.

'The Liverpool game is the first home pre-season friendly of the year, and everyone is raring to go. We had a few difficult weeks trying to get back into a training regime but we are all up to speed now and once the games start coming we can work on the technical aspects of our game. The team are feeling strong, and confident that we can push on and build on last season's success,' Morgan concluded.
