Ferguson Encouraged By Display
Manager Darren Ferguson was pleased with many aspects of his side's performance against Scottish double-winners Celtic following the first home pre-season friendly of the campaign at London Road on Friday night.
Aaron Mclean scored the Peterborough United goal in a 2-1 defeat, but Ferguson was concentrating more on the fitness aspect of the performance than the score-line in his post-match press conference.
'It was a good exercise and the main thing was that we came through it with no injuries. It was a fitness exercise more than anything and the majority of the squad got 45 minutes under their belts, which was important for us in our build-up.
'It was a good game in the first half and I thought we performed well. In the second half we kept giving the ball away and it doesn't matter what level you are at, if you don't keep possession then you are going to be punished. In terms of what we were after it was a bit unrealistic because a League Two team is not going to face a Scottish Premier League team when the season starts.
'I was really pleased with the two youngsters. Alfie Potter is a good young player, he can beat a player in the final third and has good delivery and gives us something different. Sam Goughran came on unexpectedly when Claude went off with cramp and I was very impressed with him.
'We didn't want to get hammered five or six and the lads performed admirably. We will try and sign Claude Gnakpa over the weekend because he will give us a bit more competition at the back,' Ferguson said.
Chris Westwood, Craig Mackail-Smith (groin) and Craig Morgan (tonsillitis) missed last night's game, but are expected to return next week.
