Unity FC Lift Trophy

Posted on: Wed 30 May 2007

The Unity FC project was set up to unite youngsters from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds through football with the aim of creating greater mutual respect and understanding between Peterborough's youth and last week the side lifted a trophy following a tournament in Holland.

Managed by Peterborough United Football in the Community Officer Luke Weston, the Unity team did not concede a goal throughout the eight-match tournament and lifted the trophy following a 1-0 win over a side from Germany in the final thanks to an Isaac Twigden strike.

The Unity squad were made up of youngsters aged 16 from different countries including England, Scotland, Ireland, Pakistan, Italy, Slovakia and Nepal. Based in Volkenburg, the lads stayed for four days and at the end of the tournament, the squad took part in a dance off, which was won by Michael Senior for his comedic performance.

Weston believes the dance-off showed how far the lads had come in such a short space of time. 'I think that highlighted how high the morale was and demonstrated how together the players were as a squad. The social skills they displayed were excellent and to win the tournament in the manner we did was tremendous.

'The competition was a good standard and the lads played a lot of attractive football. We also defended very well and played well as a team. The lads have only been training for about 12 weeks. The partnership between Peterborough United Football Club and the Peterborough City Council Youth Service continues to flourish,' Weston said.
