Peterborough United eased into the second round of the Carling Cup after a 4-0 victory at League One side Wycombe Wanderers with some excellent football on display from Darren Ferguson's men.
The home side had the first chance in front of goal as Jon-Paul Pittman fired wide from close-range after a deep free-kick from Matt Bloomfield caused one or two problems for the Posh back-line.
Craig Mackail-Smith fired wide of the target after a slick Posh build-up on seven minutes and Darren Ferguson's men were certainly playing some excellent football in the early moments.
A superb burst from Diagouraga in the midfield set Posh on the attack again on 13 minutes with Boyd delivering a fantastic centre, which Mackail-Smith headed wide. At the other end, Green dragged a shot wide of Joe Lewis' right hand post.
Bloomfield was stretchered off with what looked like a broken nose moments later after an aerial clash with Charlie Lee.
The deadlock was broken by Posh on 24 minutes and it was MCLEAN opening his account for the new season from the tightest of angles, squeezing the ball past goalkeeper Jamie Young at his near post, who, in fairness, should of done a lot better.
Lee Frecklington was showing some neat touches in midfield and he combined well with Mackail-Smith to create a bit of room for himself, but his 25-yard shot went wide of the target.
Boyd was inches away from scoring a perfect goal for Posh to make it 2-0 after a wonderful build-up that saw Ferguson's men switch play left to right with ease before injecting pace into the attack with Mclean and Mackail-Smith. When the ball was returned to Boyd, he found the side-netting with his left-foot.
Posh eased into a 2-0 goal lead on 33 minutes as a glorious cross from Williams was expertly converted at the near post by Tommy ROWE who scored his first goal for the club in front of the travelling supporters.
Posh defenders Zakuani and Lee did well to block two goal-bound efforts from Matt Phillips and Leon Johnson before a cross-shot from Woodman went inches past the far post with Zakuani coming close to slicing the ball past Lewis.
Half-time: Wycombe 0-2 Posh
Posh made a lively start to the second period and came close to extending their advantage on 48 minutes after a corner from Tommy Rowe was met by Charlie Lee, but his header was cleared off the line by Luke Oliver.
Batt then had the ball in the back of the net after Lee's initial effort was parried by Young, but the offside flag curtailed the celebrations. However, the Posh fans were soon up out of their seats again after a stupendous goal from George BOYD. Picking the ball up 25-yards from goal, the former Stevenage man ignored Williams on his left and unleashed a fierce dipping effort which flew into the corner.
It was 4-0 to Posh on 68 minutes and it was another fantastic Posh move, which ended with an intelligent pass from Batt into the path of Lee FRECKLINGTON who dispatched the ball into the back of the net with aplomb, crashing a superb volley past Young.
Leon Johnson did rattle the bar with a looping header from a rare Wycombe attack, but Posh were soon breaking at speed once again, cutting through the Wycombe defence at ease. Batt nearly made it five after an intelligent reverse pass from Boyd, but Young smothered the effort as Posh continued their impressive attacking endeavour Scott Beavon fired wide on 81 minutes after cutting inside from the left before Posh had appeals for a spot-kick turned down after Batt appeared to be given a shove in the penalty box by Oliver. Rowe was denied by Young on 87 minutes after good hold-up play from substitute Ben Wright.
Rowe then went close again after more excellent work from Boyd in the build-up as Wycombe prayed for the final whistle to put them out of their misery.
