Peterborough United recorded their second home victory and kept their first clean sheet in the Coca-Cola Championship after an emphatic 3-0 victory over Scunthorpe United at London Road with George Boyd bagging an impressive brace.
The pace of Jonathan Forte caused Craig Morgan a problem or two on eight minutes after a through ball from Marcus Williams skidded off the wet turf with the Welsh international volleying the ball out of play for a corner kick.
A superb drag back from Toumani Diagouraga presented him with a shooting opportunity but the low drive was deflected off Jones into the grateful arms of goalkeeper Murphy.
Another excellent piece of work from Diagouraga saw him spread the play to full-back Charlie Lee, but he saw his weak left-foot comfortably saved by Murphy. Diagouraga then fired wide of the target after a poor Frecklington free-kick was blocked by the wall.
A shot from Jonathan Forte succeeded in breaking the goal at the Moy's End, the striker firing into the side-netting from close-range. A quick repair from the groundsman and the action was back underway under referee Mike Jones' say so.
Posh opened the scoring on 25 minutes and it was a sublime finish from George BOYD, who hooked a superb volley past goalkeeper Murphy with his left-foot from just inside the area.
A superb burst of pace from Mackail-Smith saw him ease past two defenders and cut the ball back to Mclean, whose shot was blocked by Spence with the rebound falling kindly for goalkeeper Murphy.
Chris Whelpdale netted a Boyd corner kick on 33 minutes, but the referee had already blown for a foul by Lee inside the six-yard box.
Tommy Rowe produced a superb clearance off the line to deny Hayes after he had clipped the ball over the advancing Lewis and then Rowe was in the right place to head Togwell's follow-up away from danger as Scunthorpe threatened for the first time in the game.
Posh doubled the advantage a minute into stoppage time as Spence misjudged a Frecklington through ball allowing MACKAIL-SMITH to race clear, he took a touch before calmly slotting the ball past Murphy.
Half time: Posh 2-0 Scunthorpe United
The second half began with bright sunshine at London Road after a first half of wet weather with neither side making any substitutions during the interval. Whelpdale had the first effort of the second period on 50 minutes, but his 20-yard drive went wide.
On 52 minutes, Murphy produced a fine save to deny Mackail-Smith from point blank range after Boyd had fired a low cross into the box and from the resulting set-piece, Mclean sent a downward header over the crossbar from an excellent Rowe corner.
A mistake from Zakuani allowed Forte to try and acrobatic overhead kick which crashed against the crossbar as the visitors began to assert themselves on proceedings. The Iron then made a double change with Martyn Woolford, who scored two against Newcastle United on Tuesday night, and Garry Thompson introduced.
Lewis was well-placed to deny Hayes on the hour mark after Woolford had won his header against Rowe by the touchline. Boyd was excellent on the left and another teasing centre picked out Whelpdale at the back post but he could only divert the ball into the grateful arms of Murphy on the goal-line.
Woolford sent a low cross-cum-shot inches past the post on 65 minutes with Lewis getting a fingertip to the effort to divert it wide for a corner kick.
Mackail-Smith was sent clear again by Mclean on 68 minutes but after taking an awkward touch with his head, he planted his left-foot shot against the base of the post and moments later Mclean failed to test Murphy, but his left-foot volley did bounce up off the wet surface higher than the striker anticipated.
Another excellent pass from Boyd set Mackail-Smith away on 77 minutes, but Woolford tracked him all the way and made a superb tackle.
However moments later, Posh were awarded a spot-kick as Lee was upended by O'Connor with the assistant referee letting the Mr Jones know about the contact. BOYD stepped up and fired the ball low to Murphy's left and into the corner.
Hayes flashed a shot wide of the near post on 83 minutes as Scunthorpe tried to get a consolation goal. Lewis then showed great technique to keep hold of a skidding Byrne effort on 88 minutes as Posh worked hard to preserve their clean sheet. They did just that and celebrated a deserves success.
