Peterborough United were beaten 2-1 by Plymouth Argyle at London Road despite dominating for long periods as Darren Ferguson's men were condemned to their second successive Championship defeat.
After a minute of applause for the late Terry Bly, the game got underway at London Road with new signing Danny Rose handed his debut against a Plymouth side struggling at the foot of the Coca-Cola Championship.
Craig Mackail-Smith tested Romain Larrieu from the edge of the area, but the goalkeeper made a comfortable save.
Rose played a delightful ball into the path of Mackail-Smith on 10 minutes and this time Larrieu was pressed into serious action, pushing the ball around the near post.
The home side were certainly piling on the pressure and an excellent cross from Lee Frecklington picked out Mackail-Smith who stooped to head the ball goal-wards, but Larrieu was well positioned to deny the front man.
Rose was certainly showing some classy touches on the ball and was already showing the ability that saw him play for the England under 21s in the summer.
Charle Lee headed a Jamie Day corner over the bar on 28 minutes after leaping above former Posh loanee James Chester.
Frecklington headed a deep Russell Martin cross onto the roof of the net on 32 minutes after a good pass out wide by Toumani Diagouraga.
Rose was denied a debut goal by a smart stop by Larrieu after the loanee raced impressively towards goal.
Mackail-Smith found the back of the net on 35 minutes as he tucked home the rebound from a parried Charlie Lee shot, but the offside flag curtailed the celebrations.
On 39 minutes, Plymout recorded their first effort on goal as Darcy Blake let fly from distance, it is fair to say that Joe Lewis was unmoved as it flew well wide of the target.
Lewis dashed from his line to make a good save to deny Jamie Mackie on 42 minutes and moments later Posh should have been in front as Mackail-Smith was denied by a last-ditch tackle from Sawyer.
Plymouth squandered a great opportunity to make it 1-0 within 60 seconds later as Blake dashed the length of the field and then capitalised on a mistake by Diagouraga, but Lewis made a superb stop to keep the scores level.
Half-time: Posh 0-0 Plymouth Argyle
Boyd had the ball in the back of the net three minutes after the re-start, but the former Stevenage Borough man was standing in an offside position when he received possession from Mackail-Smith.
Jamie Day struck the side-netting on 54 minutes with a left-footed free-kick after Boyd was upended on the edge of the box by Shane Lowry.
Mackail-Smith was inches away from connecting to a low Mclean cross on 59 minutes before Day went under a heavy challenge from David Grey in the box, but the referee waved away muted protests.
Unfortunately the challenge on Day ended his game as he was carried off on a stretcher with what looked like a nasty ankle injury. Tom Williams was the ready made replacement.
Moments later, the visitors were in front as a long ball from Larrieu was flicked on by Fallon into the path of MACKIE who burst past Morgan and slotted the ball between the legs of the advancing Lewis.
The lead was doubled on 70 minutes as a cross from Paterson was headed past Lewis by FALLON who leaped well and directed his header into the bottom corner.
If the first goal was a shock, the second knocked the stuffing out of the home side who were struggling to make any inroads against a determined Argyle defence.
Mackail-Smith wasted another good opportunity on 80 minutes, screwing his shot wide of the near post from close range after a good through ball by substitute Batt.
Batt then saw a header cleared away from danger by Duguid at the near post as Posh threatened a late rally, but it never looked likely. Posh did get a goal on 86 minutes to set up a tense finalse as a Mclean shot was diverted past the goalkeeper by MACKAIL-SMITH.
Final Score: Posh 1-2 Plymouth Argyle
