Youth team striker Nathan Koranteng impressed in a 45-minute cameo, but it was Swansea City who did just enough to secure all three points at the Liberty Stadium as a goal on 19 minutes from the penalty spot gave Paulo Sousa's men a narrow victory.
Peterborough United boss Jim Gannon lost the services of Aaron Mclean, Craig Mackail-Smith and George Boyd to sickness ahead of the game. Boyd's consecutive appearance record of 144 is now at an end. Exodus Geohaghon was given the nod at the back ahead of Gabriel Zakuani who was named on the bench. Joe Lewis was handed the captaincy.
A huge throw from Exodus Geohaghon managed to fly over everyone and drop behind the by-line, not a bad effort considering it was thrown from the half-way line. Goalkeeper De Vries didn't look comfortable either.
However, Posh skipper Lewis was soon in the action as a diagonal ball from Bodde picked out Shefki Kuqi, who took on his chest before arrowing a shot towards the bottom corner, the goalkeeper flying to his right, to push the ball around the post.
Posh won their first corner kick of the afternoon on 10 minutes after Reuben Reid's cross was deflected behind by Ashley Williams and the set-piece was well-worked, a low drilled effort to Reid on the penalty spot, but he missed his kick completely.
Returning Dutchman Ferrie Bodde saw a powerful 25-yard shot go wide of the target, although it did have Lewis at full stretch with his dive, so he was obviously worried it could have troubled the goal.
A terrible error from Charlie Lee gifted the home side a chance to open the scoring on 19 minutes, first his control and subsequent pass let him down in a comfortable spell of possession and he compounded that mistake, by bundling over COTTERILL in the box, who coolly stepped up and converted from the spot. The referee was quick with the award of the spot-kick, but it did appear that there was contact, however minimal.
The goal gave Swansea renewed confidence and despite the loss of influential midfielder Darren Pratley to injury, they continued to probe with their passing and looked a threat going forward. Nathan Dyer screwed a shot wide of the target on 28 minutes after good hassling by the goal-scorer on the edge of the penalty area.
A good one two between Dickinson and Reid ended with the latter curling wide before Bodde was withdrawn after suffering a reaction to his injury, which had kept him sidelined for the best part of five months. After a five minute period of playing with 10-men, the Swans decided on Lee Trundle, the man who scored twice at London Road earlier in the campaign, introduced.
On that day, he turned Exodus Geohaghon for both goals, so it would be a challenge for the former Kettering man, particularly if the hosts, content to play at one-pace, upped the tempo.
Charlie Lee did fire over with his left-foot from distance on 38 minutes, but the goalkeeper was never likely to be troubled by effort. Meanwhile Geohaghon cleared vitally at the other end after Kuqi's shot was blocked by Morgan at the near post after a good overlap and cross from the full-back Rangel.
An awful back pass from Geohaghon was intercepted by Kuqi on the stroke of half-time, but Lewis made a good save with his legs before Dyer's rebound was cleared off the line by the centre back. Three minutes of stoppage time was indicated and moments into it, Cotterill sent a curler straight into the arms of Lewis.
Half-time: Swansea City 1-0 Posh
Posh youth team striker Nathan Koranteng was given a chance to shine, he was introduced at half-time for Charlie Lee and it is undoubtedly a proud moment for the youngster whose only other first team action in his career came in a recent loan spell with Boston United, where he scored twice on his debut against Durham City.
A long throw from Geohaghon was headed wide by Tommy Rowe on 48 minutes with goalkeeper de Vries rooted to his goal-line. Lewis gathered a tame Rangel shot moments later. Posh then lost the services of left-back Griffiths to injury, appearing to be a back injury, with Rowe dropping back and Kerrea Gilbert coming into the action.
Kuqi then missed a great chance to make it 2-0 after the pace of Dyer saw him get in behind the Posh defence and deliver a low cross into the box, which the striker did well to anticipate, only to hook the effort over the crossbar. Trundle then fired over as the shots on goal began to increase from the hosts, sensing a second goal was imminent.
Trundle again fired wide after cutting inside from the left to find plenty of space 30-yards from goal. A superb delivery from Koranteng picked out an onrushing Frecklington on 62 minutes, but the midfielder guided his header wide of the upright, although to be fair to the former Lincoln City man, he was on the stretch.
Koranteng was doing very well on the left, his pace causing some problems for the Swans defence, particularly the full-back who was unaware of the youngster's ability. Gabriel Zakuani was given the final 20 minutes of action with Geohaghon the man to give way.
The lively Trundle was denied by Lewis on 71 minutes with the ball just rolling past Dyer to the frustrations of the home faithful, who were beginning to get nervous with just the one goal advantage.
Captain Lewis made a good save to deny Kuqi moments later with the rebound striking the front man and rolling out for a goal-kick. Lewis produced two superb saves within 60 seconds to keep the score at 1-0, the first denying Dyer as he raced through and then, spectacularly, he pushed a curler from Trundle away from danger.
A good piece of control from Whelpdale saw him get in front of the full-back, his lofted pass found Dickinson, whose powerful volley deflected over the crossbar. Posh forced a corner kick deep into stoppage time after good work from Whelpdale but it was cleared and Posh were beaten.
