Peterborough United boss Jim Gannon started with three points as Queens Park Rangers, who ended with nine men, were beaten 1-0 at London Road, as Posh recorded their first clean sheet since December.
Tommy Rowe was handed a start by new manager Jim Gannon against Queens Park Rangers at London Road with Scott Griffiths missing out as Posh started with wing backs. Posh started positively, but it was QPR who had the first effort of the game, however Marcus Bent's shot went miles wide of the target.
Jim Gannon's era definitely started with a bang, Posh opening the scoring on nine minutes as superb hold up play from Craig Mackail-Smith saw him deliver into the feet of Boyd, he twisted and turned past Gorkks and picked out MCLEAN who made no mistake.
The home side were playing some great football in and around the QPR box, but after some quick short passing, Whelpdale found himself in a good shooting position, but his left-foot shot cleared the crossbar.
Joe Lewis denied Bent after a good right-wing cross from Peter Ramage as the Hoops took advantage of a bit of space behind the Posh wing-backs. Posh were looking like the confidence had returned and Whelpdale demonstrated that, cutting inside from the right and travelling across the edge of the area before unleashing a fierce shot which was gathered by Ikeme.
Lewis saved from Leigertwood on 25 minutes after some neat possession from the visitors in and around the Posh penalty box. Matthew Connolly sent a weak header over the crossbar on 33 minutes.
At the other end a delightful cross from Mackail-Smith picked out Rowe at the back post, but after jumping above Ramage, he headed over the upright. Connolly then produced a stunning block to deny a goal-bound Boyd effort as Posh threatened a second goal.
A superb delivery from Williams from a dead ball situation somehow managed to miss everyone in the box on 39 minutes. Lee was cautioned for a challenge on Quashie on the stroke of half-time.
Half-time: Posh 1-0 QPR
Posh lost the services of midfielder Charlie Lee to injury at the break with Josh Simpson introduced from the substitutes bench to replace the former Tottenham Hotspur player. Substitute Simpson was booked on 52 minutes for a foul.
Lewis made a superb save to deny Connolly on 56 minutes, the save all the more impressive as the strike came through a sea of bodies on a difficult surface.
QPR were reduced to 10-men on the hour mark as a two-footed lunge by Leigertwood was punished by referee Mr McDermid with Rowe on the wrong end of the challenge in the centre circle.
Mackail-Smith was denied by Ikeme after a quick counter-attack from the home side, who were looking keen to get a second goal early against the 10-men.Boyd then scuffed a shot wide of the target after a pacy pass from Livermore into the player's feet.
Boyd was then deneid by Ikeme after good work from Mackail-Smith as Posh continued to press forward. Rowe was getting a bit of heavy treatment from the QPR side and was on the wrong end of a trip from Ramage on 73 minutes, who was cautioned.
Bent scuffed a shot wide of the target on 79 minutes after a quick counter-attack from the Hoops after Whelpdale's cross was caught by goalkeeper Ikeme at the other end. The visitors were reduced to nine-men as Ramage was given a second booking for bringing down Rowe.
Bennett was cautioned for time-wasting 84 minutes for delaying at a throw in. Bent cleared the stand with an ambitious effort on 87 minutes after cutting inside from the right. Mclean stabbed a shot wide of the far post on the 90-minute mark after a good centre from Rowe.
The visitors were piling on the pressure in five minutes of added time, whipping several crosses into the box, but Ryan Bennett and in particular Craig Morgan were defended stoutly. In the dying moments, Faurlin was denied by Lewis from a set-piece as the Posh faithful prayed for the final whistle.
They were nervous moments later as Lewis made two fine reflex saves as Posh struggled to clear the ball, but the whistle arrived moments later to large cheers from the home faithful.
