Dagenham and Redbridge ended the involvement of Peterborough United in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy as Darren Ferguson's men saw their unbeaten run ended in rather tame style at London Road.
Dominic Green, playing against his former club, flighted a free-kick just past the post on four minutes as this Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie made an eventful start at London Road. At the other end, Paul Benson hooked a shot wide of the target after a free-kick was only half-cleared by the hosts.
Boyd is always exciting to watch and he showed more dazzling skills on 12 minutes as he beat the defender, but his right-footed effort went wide of the far post. Green came close to the breakthrough on the quarter-hour mark as superb hold up play from Mackail-Smith saw him hold off the attentions of the defender before delivering a great cross to the back post which Green steered into the arms of Roberts.
A tremendous committed challenge in the aerial duel by Batt nearly yielded a goal as he threw himself at a cross from Williams, his header went over, but he required treatment from physiotherapist Keith Oakes after clashing heads with the defender. Thankfully for Posh, he was soon back on his feet and back in the action.
A Tom Williams cross-shot was tipped over by Roberts after Charlie Lee's excellent pass caught the full-back out of position. Russell Martin then saw a shot well blocked after Roberts struggled to deal with a corner kick in the swirling wind.
As the first half drew to a close, Posh were trying to impose themselves on the tie, but Dagenham and Redbridge were resolute in defence and not allowing Posh to play their normal fast-flowing style of football.
Boyd nearly executed a perfect chip after more dazzling skills on 42 minutes, but his effort floated over the top of the crossbar. The lively Green curled a shot wide of the target on 50 minutes after cutting inside from the right as Posh tried to get their noses in front.
The long wait for a Micah Hyde goal was ended or so he thought moments later as he slid home a Batt cross, but the offside flag was up to the disappointment of the midfielder and the majority of the decent-sized crowd.
Paul Coutts saw a shot saved by Roberts as the home side continued to press for the breakthrough. Batt fired wide on 62 minutes after a back-heel from Boyd picked the winger's run out. The visitors opened the scoring on 65 minutes as a cross from the left by Southam picked out NWOKEJI who was afforded time and space in the area to head past Lewis via the underside of the crossbar.
Lee headed a Whelpdale corner kick wide of the target as Darren Ferguson's men tried to respond. Coutts then fired wide as Posh re-shuffled with Martin pushed into midfield and Whelpdale filling in at right-back.
Craig Morgan wasted a great opportunity to equalise on 73 minutes as he headed a Coutts corner kick wide of the target as Scott Rendell was introduced from the bench. Mackail-Smith then missed a glorious chance, even clearer than Morgan's, as he was given acres of room in the area, but he took it first time and blazed horribly wide.
Whelpdale then forced Roberts to tip over as the pressure intensified on the visitors as Posh piled forward. Shane Huke nearly capped a wonderful off the ball run by tapping home the second for the Daggers on the counter-attack, but he stabbed wide following an excellent cross from Southam.
Boyd fired well wide on 84 minutes and it looked likely that the League Two side from Essex were going to claim a notable victory. Rendell headed wide of the goal with two minutes remaining from a Whelpdale as Posh never gave up in search of an equaliser to send the tie to penalties.
Lewis made a smart save to deny Strevens late on as the game moved into stoppage time and the same player somehow missed from a yard as Dagenham ended the game strongly. Posh sent goalkeeper Joe Lewis forward for a late corner kick and a scramble ensued but the Daggers cleared and hung on for the win.
