Aaron Mclean scored the only goal of the game as Peterborough United continued their excellent run of form by claiming a 1-0 victory at Huish Park against Yeovil Town.
Yeovil Town won the toss-up and chose to kick into the wind for the first period at Huish Park which has the visiting terrace open to the elements. Lee Peltier tested the handling of Joe Lewis with the goalkeeper doing well to save. At the other end, George Boyd found space on the edge of the area and unleashed a fierce left-foot shot which rebounded off the base of the post with Josh Wagenaar stranded.
Darren Ferguson's men were certainly looking dangerous on the attack and as a Boyd cross deflected into the air, Craig Mackail-Smith saw a downward volley tipped around the post by Wagenaar. Torres then saw a shot blocked before Lee's over-head kick drifted wide.
Torres then saw a snap-shot well held by the Glovers goalkeeper after the winger had cut inside from the right. Lewis proved why he is so highly rated by producing a fine save down to his right to deny a fierce Danny Schofield shot on 14 minutes after the former Huddersfield Town man was afforded too much time and space on the edge of the area.
Torres saw a toe-poked shot pushed away by Wagenaar as the efforts continued to rain on the Yeovil goal, this latest one was more of a scuffed drive, but it was still going to creep into the corner without the goalkeeper's intervention.
Boyd then curled a right-foot shot over after a neat one-two with Torres who was certainly causing problems by drifting all over the field and he then played in Mclean whose shot from a tight angle rolled wide of the far post.
Lewis denied a goal-bound Way shot on the half hour mark but it was a comfortable save for the England under 21 shot-stopper. The opening goal arrived on 37 minutes and it was the persistence of the front two with Mackail-Smith winning a header he had no reason to win and as the ball ran loose MCLEAN took a touch and drilled the ball past Wagenaar.
Noel-Williams planted a header wide of the target after an excellent Roberts centre on 41 minutes after Williams was dispossessed as he ran across the pitch with the ball. The half time whistle came at the right time for Yeovil as Posh were threatening a second, which they certainly deserved on the balance of the first half.
Yeovil were always dangerous from set-pieces and from their first corner kick, centre back Skiverton headed over the top following a well-flighted centre. Dean Keates became the first man in the book after a foul on Warne after a corner from Martin was cleared at the near post.
Warne himself was cautioned moments later after leaving his studs showing as Lewis came out to gather an over-hit through-ball. Mclean headed a Martin corner kick over on 64 minutes as Posh tried to get a second goal, which could prove crucial.
Peltier was booked for a late lunge on Lee with the challenge happening right under the nose of the official who took a few seconds before giving the foul. Boyd saw a goal-bound effort blocked by Gareth Owen as Yeovil tried to up the tempo with plenty of tackles flying in.
Paul Coutts replaced the crocked Lee, who was nursing a foot injury following a nasty challenge by Peltier. The home side came close to levelling the scores on 77 minutes as a looping cross was dropped by Lewis under pressure and Roberts hooked the ball goal-wards, but Morgan was guarding the post and hacked the danger clear. It did look a foul on the Posh goalkeeper as the ball went into the box.
Shaun Batt replaced Torres who had put in a good shift down the right hand side of midfield. Crowd favourite Andy Welsh replaced Alcock as Skiverton, the central defender, was pushed up front to try and cause problems aerially.
Morgan produced a fine last ditch tackle to stop Welsh from finding the back of the net as the hosts penned Posh back. Russell Martin then produced a fine block to stop Skiverton as Posh struggled to clear. Chris Westwood was introduced to try and combat the pressure.
Five minutes of added time was indicated by the fourth official and Posh would have to do some defending in that period. Mclean spent most of that time getting kicked, but it was worthwhile as Posh saw out the win.
