Peterborough United midfielder Dean Keates scored a sublime free-kick in stoppage time to secure a 2-2 draw against Swindon Town at London Road, but it was the celebrations that followed the final whistle that the majority of the crowd were waiting for and they were not disappointed.
The Swindon Town players performed a guard of honour for promoted Peterborough United ahead of kick-off at London Road and it was certainly a carnival atmosphere inside the stadium.
Charlie Lee, who won a clutch of awards prior to kick-off, saw a toe-poked effort well saved by goalkeeper Phil Smith and the shot-stopper did well moments later to deny the same player after a towering header at the back post.
Swindon striker Billy Paynter fired wide at the other end after bursting through and although this was a game that neither side had to win, both teams were keen to go out with a bang to bring the curtain down on this Coca-Cola League One campaign.
Aaron Mclean saw a cross-shot cleared by Jamie Vincent on 13 minutes after a good reverse ball from George Boyd. Lee was determined to cap a wonderful season with a goal, he had another effort which was saved by Smith after a neat one-two with Dean Keates.
Scottish under 21 international Paul Coutts floated a shot wide of the target on the quarter hour mark as Posh continued to dominate. A poor pass from Lee was intercepted by Simon COX on 17 minutes and the league's top scorer didn't waste the opportunity, dragging the ball past Morgan and curling a superb shot into the corner.
Craig Mackail-Smith glanced a header well wide of the target at the other end after a good cross from Boyd. Mclean was then denied by Smith as the striker let fly from a tight angle.
Lee was determined to atone for his error and played another neat one-two with Mclean, but his shot was wayward and didn't trouble goalkeeper Smith. A Dominic Green free-kick went inches past the far post on 34 minutes while Boyd was denied by Smith.
Captain Russell Martin came close to a leveller after a good through-ball from Keates, but his shot was diverted wide and from the resulting corner-kick, Posh drew themselves level as Boyd crossed for MACKAIL-SMITH who tucked the ball past Smith at the near post for his 26th goal of the campaign.
Another individual error led to Swindon Town's second goal of the afternoon as a poor pass from Coutts was intercepted and the ball was pushed on to COX, who again made no mistake, rifling the ball into the top corner.
Posh had appeals for a spot-kick turned down on 50 minutes after Boyd appeared to be tripped by Michael Timlin, but the referee waved away the protests. Mclean squandered a good chance to draw the scores level after wrestling past Jerel Ifil, but his shot went wide.
Coutts saw a goal-bound shot blocked by Ifil before goalkeeper Smith made a smart stop to deny a cross-shot from Green. Posh were given the chance to level the scores after Ifil tripped Boyd, but Mclean saw his penalty well saved by Smith.
Green then tricked his way into the box, but his shot was well parried by the goalkeeper who was having an inspired afternoon. Timlin fired wide when well-placed on 64 minutes after Cox had held the ball up to good effect.
The chances kept coming for Darren Ferguson's men, but they kept wasting them, Lee the latest to try his luck, but the defender's header went over the bar following a decent Keates delivery.
Mclean was denied by Smith after a neat turn on the edge of the area, but it looked like the hosts wouldn't find that second goal they were looking for to bring themselves level on the score-sheet.
James McKeown was given a run-out for the final 10 minutes of the game as Lewis made way. Shaun Batt also came on for the final exchanges. Batt was denied a goal by a superb save from Smith before Martin's effort was cleared off the line by Jamie Vincent.
Substitute Lee Frecklington was denied a stunning goal by another superb Smith save and he certainly was in excellent form, the Town goalkeeper, this time diving to his right to push the effort over bar. From the resulting corner, Gaby Zakuani saw a powerful header cleared off the line by Timlin via the crossbar.
Posh finally got the equaliser they deserved in stoppage time as a superb free-kick from Dean KEATES nestled in the top corner and it was a perfect way to finish.
