George Boyd and Craig Mackail-Smith gave Peterborough United a famous win over Leeds United at London Road as the majority of the 13,000+ crowd witnessed a superb showing from Darren Ferguson's men.
Leeds, wearing a bright yellow kit, made most of the early running with Luciano Becchio firing wide of the near post from 20-yards after Gabriel Zakuani missed his kick. However, it was Leeds goalkeeper Casper Ankergren who was forced to make the first save of the afternoon and what a save it was, pushing Craig Mackail-Smith's effort away from danger after superb work from George Boyd. The rebound nearly crept in too, the ball striking the foot of Douglas before trickling inches past the post.
Becchio headed a Howson free-kick wide of the goal on nine minutes as Paul Coutts was penalised for a foul by the touch-line. Leading goal-scorer Jermaine Beckford sent a curling effort over the crossbar moments later after the ball ran loose.
Coutts saw a low drive well gathered by Ankergren after the Scottish midfielder did well to beat his man in the centre of the field. Argentine front man Becchio should have done better on 18 minutes after racing onto a Robinson through-ball, but his attempted lob went wide of the target.
Boyd was showing excellent touches on the ball and his smart turn saw him evade his marker, but his right-footed shot was fairly weak and Ankergren made a comfortable save. The persistence of Coutts created a chance for Boyd and his slide-rule pass to Mackail-Smith saw the striker baring down on goal, but from a tight angle, his shot was saved by the legs of the Leeds goalkeeper.
Lewis had to be alert to race from his line and intercept a defence-splitting pass from Robinson with the goalkeeper diving at the feet of Beckford. Aiden White saw a cross-cum-shot drift across the six-yard box after Delph played a delightful ball inside the full-back.
A snap-shot from Boyd was easily claimed by Ankergren as Posh took a quick free-kick. Coutts was having the game of his life in midfield and another superb pass to Batt created another opportunity, his cross was cut out but it rebounded back towards goal and Marques did well to head clear.
Mackail-Smith should have broken the deadlock on 36 minutes as Coutts again picked him out, but his first touch was heavy and then he couldn't force the ball past Ankergren who did well to spread himself. Gabriel Zakuani then headed a Martin cross wide of the target as Posh continued to press.
There were no changes at the half-time interval as both sides tried to get a foothold in the game and it was Posh who got the all-important first goal. It was a deep cross from Batt that was controlled awkwardly by Green, he smashed the ball across the box and BOYD was there to sweep the ball past Ankergren.
Robinson immediately whistled a shot inches past the upright before Mackail-Smith had a glorious chance to make it 2-0 after outpacing the defence, but his left-foot shot was saved by Ankergren.
Jonny Howson shot wide of the target on 52 minutes and Leeds will have plenty of belief that they could get back into the game, but Posh were playing some excellent football with Coutts again at the heart of it, his pass to Martin saw the full-back fire across the six-yard box which Mackail-Smith just failed to convert.
Lewis made a fine parry to deny a fierce Delph effort as the action swung to the other end, it was certainly a fine pace to the game and a superb advert for League One football. Robert Snodgrass was the first substitute used by the Whites just before the hour mark with Howson the man replaced.
Shaun Batt showed got intuition to find some room from a Martin throw-in and he raced towards the Leeds defence before unleashing a left-foot shot which found the side-netting.
The highly-rated Beckford took advantage of a kind deflection to fire over the crossbar moments later as the game showed no signs of settling down. Leeds were awarded a free-kick right on the edge of the penalty box after Douglas was tripped by Coutts but Snodgrass saw his set-piece strike the wall.
The visitors were certainly growing in stature and they were having plenty of possession on the ball without really getting in behind the Posh back-four. Lewis gathered a Douglas shot at the second attempt as Posh introduced Chris Whelpdale for Green.
A Boyd header from a Whelpdale cross was well saved by Ankergren after the substitute had delivered a fine centre. Morgan did very well to block a goal-bound Robinson effort as the pressure began to mount at the other end.
A powerful run from Batt saw him burst past three defenders and his curling effort was well parried by Ankergren who did well to parry it away from danger. Leeds had the ball in the back of the net as Becchio fired home the rebound after the ball bounced off Lewis, but the offside flag was up.
The impressive Coutts was replaced due to injury 10 minutes from time with Charlie Lee the man to come on in his place. Williams made a superb clearance to stop Robinson from levelling the scores on 86 minutes as Leeds broke with pace.
It was 2-0 to the Posh in stoppage time as Boyd crazily missed his kick, but for once it didn't matter as he picked himself up, threaded the ball to MACKAIL-SMITH and he tucked home his eight goal of the season to the delight of the home support. Beckford was denied by Lewis moments later as Posh tried to shut the visitors out.
