Peterborough United were frustrated by a resolute Wrexham side at London Road with goalkeeper Joe Lewis stretchered off in a neck brace after a shocking challenge by Steve Evans.

An injury to returning midfielder Charlie Lee gave cause for concern in the opening moments after he was clattered by team mate Claude Gnakpa but the former Tottenham Hotspur Reserve team captain was soon on his feet and rejoined the action.

A snapshot from Craig Mackail-Smith didn't trouble Wrexham goalkeeper Gavin Ward on four minutes after strike partner Aaron Mclean threaded the ball into his path.

Mackail-Smith saw a shot on the turn fly past the crossbar as Posh looked threatening in the final third.

Goalkeeper Joe Lewis made a fine reaction save at the other end after Newton's attempted clearance struck Neil Roberts and was heading for the bottom corner.

Wrexham were looking dangerous from set pieces and won their third corner of the afternoon on 18 minutes after a good piece of defending from Chris Westwood, the corner failed to trouble Posh shot stopper Joe Lewis who made a comfortable save.

Lewis was on hand to deny Llewellyn moments later as the visitors started to control matters particularly in midfield where Danny Sonner was becoming an increasing influence.

Gnakpa was somewhat fortunate to escape with a booking after a rash elbow on Broughton during an aerial battle.

Wrexham were the width of a post away from taking the lead on 24 minutes after a free kick to the far post was headed back across goal by Stuart Nicholson.

Posh were struggling to keep hold of the ball for any long period of time and needed to settle down and keep the ball for a period of time to get them back into the League Two encounter.

A 20 yard drive from Mclean was well claimed by Ward as Posh finally got the ball down and tried to play some football in the manner that has seen them record three successive league victories.

Mclean should have done better on 37 minutes after a great run and cross from Boyd on the left but the striker scuffed his shot and the ball fell to the grateful Ward.

Wrexham would certainly be the happier of the two teams at the interval after frustrating Posh for long periods and restricting Darren Ferguson's men to only half chances in front of goal.

Lewis stopped the visitors breaking the deadlock on the hour mark at the second attempt after Spender got in behind Jamie Day, the shot stopper grabbing the ball just at the right moment as Roberts closed in. A volley from Boyd was then clutched by the experienced Ward after a decent delivery from Keates into the near post area.

Former Posh defender Phil Bolland produced a fine clearing header to stop Mackail-Smith getting on the end of a Charlie Lee ball.

Mclean volleyed over after Lee's deep cross fell kindly to the striker before both managers made a switch with Scott Mitchell introduced by Ferguson and Michael Proctor given a chance to shine by Wrexham chief Brian Little.

A collision between Gnakpa and goalkeeper Joe Lewis brought a holt to proceedings moments later with the goalkeeper receiving treatment with what appeared to be a blow to the face.

A mass brawl ensued after a nasty challenge by Wrexham centre back Steve Evans on Lewis, when the trouble died down referee Mr Horwood issued three yellow cards, but the lasting damage to Lewis was un-repairable to Physio Keith Oaks and youngster James McKeown was introduced for his first taste of league action.

Lewis was carried off on a stretcher in a neck brace to a standing ovation from the home faithful. Things were getting very heated with Wrexham captain Neil Roberts extremely fortunate to escape a caution as he fouled Keates and the referee threatened to lose control.

Roberts was booked moments later for an accumulation of fouls and was officially the most hated man inside the stadium.

Keates floated a free kick wide of the target as the game entered the last 10 minutes of normal time, although there should be a considerable amount of stoppage time.

A stinging effort from Boyd was fumbled by Ward but the ex-Stoke City goalkeeper was able to scramble and claim the loose ball. Morgan headed a Keates corner over the bar on 81 minutes as the pressure began to mount of the resolute visitors.

Lee was cautioned for dissent after venting his frustration at the referee's award of a free kick which was given after Boyd had committed a needless foul by the centre circle. Evans then volleyed over at the other end as the game became stretched.

Morgan was booked for grabbing Llewellyn and as the ball ran out of play boss Ferguson showed pinpoint accuracy to roll the ball onto the fallen winger.

Evans somehow escaped a second caution for an elbow on Mackail-Smith midway through the seven minutes of stoppage time. Posh were denied a goal in the last moments of the game after Morgan was penalised for a push on Spender as he nodded the ball across to the unmarked Mackail-Smith who prodded home.
