A double from Aaron Mclean earned Peterborough United a 3-1 victory over Dagenham and Redbridge at London Road to extend the unbeaten run to nine games and lift the club into third place in the table.

After a hectic pre-match which featured a moments silence for Royal Anglian Regiment past and present during in this week of remembrance, the league two encounter got underway.

The Daggers, wearing bright yellow shirts won several early set pieces and on six minutes Chris Moore headed wide from a decent centre from Richard Graham.

Sam Sloma was gifted a presentable opportunity on 11 minutes following a deep cross but he managed to direct his left foot volley wide of the up-right as Posh made a nervy start.

Goalkeeper Mark Tyler produced a superb save to keep the scores level after the visitors sprung a quick counter attack which begun with a slick pass from Shane Huke, the Posh shot stopper eventually saving with his legs to deny Moore.

Dean Keates was inches away from breaking his Posh goal scoring duck on 18 minutes after Mclean's scuffed shot rolled into his path but goalkeeper Tony Roberts made a good smothering save.

Youngster Chris Whelpdale was denied by Roberts after a crisp left footed drive from the edge of the area as Posh started to up their tempo. Posh should have been 1-0 up on 23 minutes as Mclean was afforded a free header from a Keates in swinging corner but his header was kept off the line by a combination of Roberts and John Boardman.

Posh hit the post through a glancing Craig Mackail-Smith header, but less than 60 seconds later Dagenham found themselves a goal to the good after a slick counter attack which was superbly finished by Paul BENSON who lifted the ball over the advancing Mark Tyler. This move developed whilst centre back Craig Morgan went down on the edge of the Dagenham area with a facial injury which was treated following the goal by Physiotherapist Keith Oakes.

Frenchman Claude Gnakpa glanced a header wide from a Whelpdale long throw on 33 minutes as Darren Ferguson's men pressed for a leveller.

A snapshot from Jamie Day flew over the bar moment later but the visitors, managed by ex-Posh boss John Still were defending resolutely and looking dangerous on the break.

Day dragged a shot wide on 43 minutes after advancing from his left back role, but as the first half drew to a close the visitors were fairly comfortable on their lead and Posh were struggling to break a determined defence down.

Whelpdale saw a powerful looping header palmed away by an unconvincing Roberts just before injury time with Mclean firing the rebound straight at the retreating goalkeeper.

Whelpdale then found the side netting with a volley at the back post after Charlie Lee's free kick had been blocked.

George Boyd fired a left foot drive over the cross bar five minutes after the re-start after Gnakpa had initially done well to force the ball into his path under pressure from two defenders.

Experienced midfielder Micah Hyde was introduced into the fray as Posh deployed Whelpdale at right back to try and get more attacking vigour.

Posh drew level on 69 minutes and it was a personal relief for midfielder KEATES who opened his account in the blue of Posh by firing into the roof of the net at the back post after Mclean had flicked on Jamie Day's centre.

Mclean should have made it 2-1 on 74 minutes after a delightful cross from Boyd picked out the striker, but he headed wide when it looked like the net was going to bulge again.

Midfielder Lee fired a left-foot shot wide of the target as the pressure began to grow on the Daggers with Shane Huke now playing at the back for John Still's men.

The hosts got their noses in front for the first time on the 79 minutes with a well worked goal with George Boyd threading the ball into the path of Makcail-Smith whose cross to the near post was clinically met by top goal scorer Aaron MCLEAN who finished superbly from eight yards.

Dagenham wasted a golden opportunity to get themselves back on level terms less than two minutes later as Strevens was given time at the back post but he headed over the bar from close range.

Posh made it 3-1 on 82 minutes and again it was the strike pairing of MCLEAN and Mackail-Smith with the same result as the front man swept home at the near post after Mackail-Smith's fantastic pull-back. Moments later Keates volley over from 25 yards and then Lee saw two efforts blocked by Huke as the action continued to be fast paced.

Mackail-Smith saw a late effort elude both Mclean and the far post before the referee brought a close to proceedings.
