Danny Crow scored a brace as Peterborough United came from behind to dump Coca-Cola League One side Tranmere Rovers out of the FA Cup after a fantastic display at Prenton Park.

Tranmere Rovers got the game underway at the second attempt kicking towards the large Posh travelling contingent who had been buoyed by the appearance of chairman Darragh MacAnthony to orchestrate the singing.

The hosts made the most of the early running and Greenacre forced Tyler into a superb fingertip save after Shuker had delivered a teasing centre to the near post.

Shane Huke made a fine block to deny a powerful Shuker effort on nine minutes as the League One side continued to press. A superb tackle from Holden created an opportunity, but his cross was too heavy and eluded Mclean at the far post.

Danny Crow dragged a shot wide of the near post on the quarter hour mark after Huke had broken up the play and threaded a pass to Butcher. At the other end, Ellison, who came into the line-up at the last minute after Paul Mullin suffered an injury in the warm-up, fired over the crossbar from long-range.

Posh were inches away from breaking the deadlock on 19 minutes as Butcher's fierce shot took a slight deflection and sent the ball arrowing for the corner, but Ward managed to tip the ball around the post. Holden fired the loose ball from the resulting corner at goal, but Ward managed to hold on at the second attempt.

Tranmere opened the scoring on 32 minutes as a corner drifted in by Shuker and SHERRIFF powered a header past Tyler via the underside of the crossbar.

Mclean saw a curling shot saved by Ward on the counter attack after Crow and Newton had impressively linked up in midfield. Crow forced Ward into a smothering save on 39 minutes after cutting inside from the left after Newton had burst from midfield.

The majority of Tranmere's supporters were on their feet moments later as Ellison's strike found the netting, but it was the side-netting and they were soon back on their seats.

As the game entered first half stoppage, Posh drew themselves level as a clipped ball from Holden found Newton, he beat the full-back and delivered a cross to the near post where CROW swept the ball past Ward.

A minute later, Holden saw a shot blocked as the referee brought the half to a close to cheers from the visiting fans.

Posh made a bright start to the second half with Branston heading a corner kick wide of the target as Newton caused plenty of problems down the right hand side.

Shuker saw a free-kick blocked by the wall after Stirling had been penalised for a foul on the edge of the area. Tyler produced a fine save with his legs to deny Taylor's fierce drive on 57 minutes as Rovers caught Posh on the break.

Posh were throwing attacks after attacks at the Tranmere rearguard as the game reached the hour mark with Mclean's shot deflected inches wide before Huke won yet another corner kick. The latter then drilled a long-range shot over the bar after Stirling had laid the ball into his path.

A dipping volley from Taylor dropped inches over the crossbar at the other end after the front two had linked up impressively. On 70 minutes, Posh got themselves in front as a long throw from Stirling was flicked on by Arber and CROW was on hand to pounce and fire Posh ahead to the delight of the fans behind that goal.

Posh were beginning to play with superb confidence and a fantastic three-man move carved the hosts open with Newton threading a ball to Mclean, his back heel picked out Butcher, whose volley just cleared the bar.

Mclean was then sent clear by Crow as Posh dominated, but the striker's off-balance shot was saved by the legs of Ward. Branston then received a booking for a late challenge, his fifth of the season, so he will face a suspension.

Goalkeeper Tyler then showed his worth with a fine tip over from substitute Calvin Zola's goal-bound header as Rovers tried the direct route. Huke was then shown a yellow card for hacking down Shuker as tensions began to rise.

Craig Morgan was introduced five minutes from time for Huke for his competitive debut for the club since joining on-loan from Milton Keynes Dons. Futcher was then booked as Posh began to give away a few free-kicks in dangerous areas as the match entered the final few minutes.

Five minutes of stoppage time was then indicated by the fourth official which certainly lifted the home faithful. It was heroic defending from Posh one minute into that stoppage time with Tyler denying Taylor and as the ball fell to Greenacre, Branston threw himself at the ball and blocked the effort on the line.

Trevor Benjamin replaced Mclean deep into stoppage time as Rovers won another free-kick this time in their own half. And finally the referee blew the final whistle and Posh had dumped high flyers Tranmere out of the cup.
