Mayor Meets Unity FC At Training Session

Posted on: Wed 13 May 2009

Mayor of Peterborough Councillor Pat Nash met with young people who play for Peterborough's Unity Football Club at a training session on The Embankment on Tuesday evening.

Young people who play for Unity FC will be representing Peterborough in the European youth football tournament in Holland on Friday 22 May 2009. In 2007 the team returned home triumphant having not conceded a single goal in all its seven matches on their way to winning the European Cup.

The Unity Football Club was set up in 2002 to bring together young people from different areas, cultures and backgrounds with a common interest in football to have fun and improve their skills.

The aim is to celebrate the similarities between youngsters from different ethnic backgrounds and promote greater mutual understanding and respect among young people from Peterborough's diverse communities. The club is a joint initiative between Peterborough City Council, Peterborough Racial Equality Council and Peterborough United football club.

Peterborough United provides all the coaching for the team and additional support. Mayor Councillor Nash said: 'The Unity Football team has really captured the imagination of young people in Peterborough with its unique approach in encouraging respect and cohesion among different groups.

'I am looking forward to meeting the players and wishing them the best of luck for the upcoming tournament in Holland. Let's hope they can emulate their successes of 2007.'

Posh donated a kit for Unity FC and we wish them the very best for the tournament.
